They are pretty shit on ice, and not great on plain old slick surfaces either. They also wear down fairly quickly considering the price of the boot unless you're babying them a lot. The good news is they are of course resoleable, and then you can put on whatever kind of sole you want. If you like the boots I would not worry about the crepe soles too much, I'd just watch my step in slick weather until the first resole.

Half size down for all Red Wings. That's what I've done with my Iron Rangers and Blacksmiths and they fit perfectly.
As for Wolverine vs Red Wing, you hear a lot worse complaints about wolverine. Red Wing is very consistent in their quality

If you want to get them new, Steinadler has their own reproduction, probably to military standards. Steinkogler is a military supplier and their boots look a little different... probably a little higher quality in my opinion, can't be a big difference though. They don't sell directly, but you should find several austrian shops selling them.
