I have the saddest business casual wardrobe (pic related). What is best for 'business casual' as a receptionist in the construction industry (USA)?

This coming Tuesday I begin a new job (see above) and am looking to fill the [major] business-casual void in my wardrobe beforehand via second-hand stores. What are some must-haves? What are some things to avoid completely (apart from mini skirts--which I already have -.- and boring leggings)?

Btw, I'm staying at an Air B&B; these are not my digs.

Seems like you have more tops than bottoms, and that's okay. Get at least one knee length skirt and one pair of trousers you like. What's your budget like? What shoes do you wear? What kind of climate do you live in?

Shoes: oxfords.

Planning to get a pencil skirt, one more pair of 'slacks' (neutral, and possibly patterned), as well as at lease one button-up blouse. Seems so... lackluster. Or is that just the nature of business casual?

Oxfords are a good multi-season option.

Business casual can be pretty boring, but if you're selective with what you buy, you can wear work clothes casually too.

Search for "capsule wardrobes" for work to see the basics that some women buy. Definitely consider dresses, especially if you have some day-to-night events

I worked in Germany for a year and packed five bottoms (1 pair of pixie pants, 1 pair of wool trousers, 1 pair of cropped slim slacks, one pencil skirt, one a-line skirt) and about 10 tops (six knits and four woven blouses) for work and that lasted me pretty much the whole year.

Find a solid second-hand store. I used to shop at Buffalo Exchange a fair bit in Seattle. The store in the university district always had great find. Often brand new stuff that too-rich-too-care kids would sell for a few bucks.
Looks like there's a few near NY, NY.

Primark (I believe there's on on Staten Island). Slim-fit chinos are only $15 a piece (buy black, navy, blue). Everything else from there is shit, don't bother. You can get decent button-downs at TJ Maxx/Marshall's or outlet shops if you have some nearby.

If you're on the buy side at a bank, you'll be judged heavily on what you wear, no one gives a shit if you're on support side (IT, etc). Most places are business casual now (Goldman dresses like Google, these days) but dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

I live in midtown, but have a causal office, so I primarily wear black pocket tees, jeans/khakis, and black leather sneakers

Occasionally add a denim jacket in case of weather, and for bad weather I have a big Carhartt wip coat
