The one I got is exceptionally thin, not sure if that's a trait of most skagens but the ones I saw available when I bought it seemed the same as well. It feels like I'm wearing nothing on my wrist. I've gotten quite a few compliments on it and even if I didn't it's replaced my casio for my daily when I work.
Would recommend it overall as long as your wrist isn't overly big

When you say "cost a lot in maintenance" how much are you talking? Do they just have to be serviced regularly and if so can I learn to do it myself? The movement itself is a clone of an eta so I don't think there will be any shortage of tutorials and spare parts online

$500 is pretty steep for servicing an ordinary cheap mechanical watch with no complications, and you can definitely go more than 3 years. But yeah, cheap mechanical watches tend to be kind of disposable and probably not worth servicing. You can just wear it until you get bored of it or run it into the ground which could easily be 10+ years.

the problem is that a bad cleaning can comepletly mess up your watch, so you should visit a proper person who knows what theyre doing. consider it as a super high precision haircut that takes 5hrs. thats why its so expensive

u can always get it cheaper somewhere but u risk ur watch.

i dont think its a main reason why people dislike cheap automatics.

most people just dont realise that a watch is more a car than a pendant or a ring, keepin it runnig is actually a really important part of owning one

Thanks for the replies.
So now I just have to decide if the watch being mechanical is worth $100 a year or replacing it every couple years once it's run into the ground. I'm actually leaning more towards the latter, as I intend to upgrade to a proper ETA at some point (probably a steinhart). Don't know if I'll be able to afford that by the time my shitter breaks though

I don't know economics. I was waiting to grab one over the summer and missed the $150 price jump after it got the cut. If I've gotta strike now I will, but really wanted to hold ouot for something lower in the next few months.

save ur money and keep your eyes peeled for a vintage alpinist with a black dial, those things are incredible... the movements can run without service for 10-20yrs so when u receive it you can service it and it will run great, and it's different to the typical alpinist

Seiko low-end mechanical watches are exceedingly well made, so the sub-vintage market (20 years back or so) is full of choice cuts... I wear a new SARB033 myself though, $330aud... had to get a hirsch for it as the bracelet is genuine trash... but number one rule is don't buy vintage watches from India... otherwise no need to buy Seiko mechanical new

/trv/ here. Going to be in Mexico for a month and then India for two. First time trying to buy a watch but not my first time overseas or in either country. Not really sure where to start looking and hoping for some guidance.

I'll be taking a 'workcation' in CDMX and dressing conservatively -- dress shoes, dark jeans, and casual long-sleeve button-downs. Found the business-casual look can be pulled off to great effect in Latin America, wherein the more respectable segments of society tend to value a put-together look.

I don't want to blow big money on an expensive watch since this is a fashion experiment for me. Was hoping to stick within the $100-$150 range with quickfast shipping or wide availability. I'll be in Boston next Sunday and then CDMX on the 28th, so I don't have much time to wait around for packages to arrive.

I bought a knock-off watch in Mumbai last November that I wore until it fell apart. Really liked the look -- brown leather strap, no large border around the watch face, and a minimalist, classic look (which tends to be how I dress -- not flashy and no logos).

Any advice would be appreciated.

for me i always love a diver with SS bracelet, and as someone who had rolex'es omega's and such i will always cherish the first watch i wore the casio aq-230ga.

bought it when i was 16 when i got my first real job, and still works amazing i wore it in my brother's wedding and looked at it, and felt how time flies.
