these look too trendy and minimalist, they'll be out of style within the year probably. not good if you want something versatile. timex and swatch are good beginner watches. my first watch was a big ass timex chronograph but in hindsight i like my swatches way way more. timex can be too big for dressier occasions too

As far as I understand dress watches are really supposed to be very clean and without too many complications, apart from a date window. A chronograph definitely makes a watch not a dress watch.

also, what is with all the swatch posting? I really do not understand the appeal.

I have to say though, I still think you're way better off getting yourself a seiko 5 or one of the cheap orient watches than a Swatch, swiss or not.

You could easily get a nice mechanical Seiko 5 with automatic winding for the 50 - 70 dollars that you'd need to get the swatch beau.

seiko and orient all seem to follow a relatively rigid design philosophy. swatch designs can be a hit or miss but not all of them are as bizarre or as much of a fashion statement as pic related

I have a seiko 5, invicta pro diver with nh35a movement (seiko) and one orient tri star. Out of the three, the orient works significantly better. It keeps its charge way better, I hardly have to ever purposely spin it to wind it. Meanwhile the other two regularly lose power and end up dropping 20 to 30 seconds a day until I wind them up. Also, i tried testing how sensitive the rotor is to changes in angles and it does seem that the orient has a more sensitive rotor. Maybe I just got lucky but for what it's worth, I would recommend you get an orient over a seiko 5

It's a really good first watch. Tons of models and dials and shit to choose from, clear displayback for looking at the movement in action, and a price tag that's under a hundred bucks.

Anyone have experience with ticinio pilots? This handwinding seems really good for the price so I'm skeptical. Never heard of the "Asian Cotes De Geneve 6497" movement before but people online seem to say it's pretty reliable.
Thoughts?

TAG is pretty garbage, they just ride on the glory of a once good brand they took over. Take a look at the used market and see how much TAGs devalue immediately, even if you don't intend to ever sell the watch that should still tell you something about what they're worth.

Well, Seiko sarb033 and 035 are a very safe budget choice that's kinda sports but can very well work as a dress watch. They're the same except for dial color. If you do like it, I'd look for one quick as they've been recently discontinued and prices are rising. If it's strictly dress, your can easily get a nice vintage dress Omega in that price bracket, just be prepared for servicing it.

Well, obviously being automatic doesn't dictate the price by itself. The movement inside SARB watches is mid-tier so it doesn't make the watch expensive by itself. Of course except for that there are many other factors that will determine the price of a watch, like the finish of the case, dial, indices, hands or bracelet(if it's sold on one), level of water resistance etc.

Hamilton, there is the khaki king auto(another king of the under 500 range), the khaki field auto and also the jazz master quartz is under 500
There's citizen with the very classic eco drive
Bulova will surely have something that you may like
If you like bahaus there's junkers
For fliegers I believe the usual recommendation is Laco
Orient has a lot to chose from, too
There this kinda new brand called undone which I've seen getting nice review but idk if they are paid or not

For 12 bucks it seems like a steal, unfortunately people ask way too much for seikos nowadays, even for the ones that aren't worth anything, that's why I stay with swiss brands, even if lesser known, they normally are better watches for just a little more than what an automatic seiko costs.

Just bought a cyma hammer from the 50's for the same price I bought my seiko bell-matic, happier with the cyma.

I would avoid gold plating which I'm guessing is what those have. It's also not really dressy enough for gold in my opinion. I don't have anything against gold in general though. Obscure brands or brands that used to be big but are dead today are probably the best place to find deals if that's what you want. Omega has tons of watches out there and there's plenty of information out there on them. Seiko is also popular and the less desirable ones can be cheap, vintage quartz Seikos are a great cheap option because they're durable and low-maintenance so there's less chance you'll get a busted expensive headache that needs lots of servicing. Rolex probably has the most information out there on every single little variation and obscure model, but the prices are insanely overinflated and totally not worth it for what you get unless you're really obsessed with owning a vintage Rolex. Old Soviet watches like Amphibias or Raketa or whatever are dirt cheap and they're kind of fun, but a huge portion of the ones on ebay are non-original or in terrible condition and most Soviet watches are just really shit.

You need to do your homework on whatever you buy so you don't overpay and get burned with some parts-bin or repainted or broken junk. And there's just a whole lot of garbage out there, everyone with an ebay account thinks their dead uncle's beat-up piece of shit watch is worth a million dollars. Whatever you buy will probably need servicing when you get it which will add on to the purchase price, you can rarely trust whatever the seller says about "recently serviced runs great" or whatever because most sellers offer no guarantee or proof of any of that.

Vintage watches are generally just more fragile and not waterproof and more finnicky. Newer watches have little conveniences you'll miss like sapphire crystals and quickset dates and stuff. I like all my vintage watches but I woudn't want to wear any of them as an everyday watch, new watches are just easier to deal with.

Which one do you like best, I'm leaning towards the longines blue dial 39 mm (wristlet here). However, I do like to wear lots of black and gold so a silver watch would not be the best so my third option is a two tone Oris big crown.

So i don't visit this thread too often since I mean if you can't afford a 300 dollar watch you shouldn't be buying watches.

Bought a cheap orient once, it was small as fuck and looked like a toy, returned that shit real quick. This is the watch i'm buying now? does anyone else have it? I bought it mainly for work purposes(job requires me to keep time alot) but it would be nice if I could make it effay.

Im not fat so it will fit me fine, my only concern is that I wear a gold chain/pendant when I go out and I think the mix of this rubber watch with the gold might look gaudy.

I do like minimalism though, I mostly wear Scandinavian/Japanese Uniqlo core, with Doc Marten shoes.

You need at least $400 for this.
A seiko is a good start at this price range, they will provide you good movement for its price, and they have nice classic looking watches that you can buy.

Look up this watch: Seiko SRPB41J1
That is my recommendation.

Really thinking of picking up this watch. I like Tissots, it's got ETA movement, sapphire glass, the right price... but it's just 38 mm. I am kind of a wristlet, but I fear even for me 38 mm is going to be comically small.

Most of their divers are clean and minimal, find one you like in your price range. SARB033 or 035 would look good as well and might be a little more to your liking. You could wear them on the metal bracelet they come with or black or brown leather.

Yes even preferable generally speaking. Do you know how big your wrist is in centimetres? I can give you a better answer then.

If you want to have a big watch like many people do nowadays with their fashion watches and thick diver watches, then 40+ might be better. But on a small wrist 38 is supposed to be the size that looks good.
