I've been looking for a new backpack for like two years now. gf has a Kanken which I actually really like, but my only real gripe is the lack of real bottle pockets on the sides.
my criteria:
easy access - i really like the square shape and wide zip on the kanken
colorful/unique - i don't want some boring shit
fairly simple - 2 to 4 pockets would be nice
good bottle pockets - I carry a wide mouth nalgene with me
a laptop compartment would be good but isn't necessary

max budget is $150, suggestions?

No it's not. The handles look lame as shit unless you are using them, you should look for a two way bag that hides the handles instead of adding them to the silhouette. Also, they cheaped out on material/design with that side pocket, you can't have a full bag plus a water bottle because it won't fit. Even this jansport bag can actually accommodate a water bottle

>> No.13287868

having used a bag with the same design (kanken) the straps are pretty useful and look fine, I agree on the side pockets though

Yeah this thread is pretty bad at the moment lol
The criteria I have for a good bag is much different than when I first started getting into this shit, I just learned what I like from experience. But for me a side zipper and a REAL side pocket are both mandatory, cuz I use them all the time
I prefer the "rucksack" design (flap with buckles, drawstring closure, etc) but hate some of the small details of, for example, the Topo Designs Rover Pack. The pockets are fucking useless cuz they have to room to expand. My Briefing bag on the other hand doesn't have that problem

bag I have right now has a side zipper and while i use it sometimes i definitely don't find it mandatory. a good large side pocket is pretty important though I will agree, I've just largely given up on that as any bag I've found that I like doesn't have them. Like I said, I've been looking for two years.
speaking of topo, I do think the stack pack and mountain packs look decent.
also really like the Poler Stuff Orange Labal pictured.

Well the benefit of the rucksack is the additional outer pocket. I like having immediate access to important things like my Leatherman, my work phone, and the other stuff I keep there. But the drawback is that you have to unbuckle and loosen the drawstring to get until the main pocket, which is why I like a side zipper. Got a bag that has one and now I'm a convert
Just as long as you can see a picture of the side pocket before getting a bag you'll know if it will actually fit your bottle, luckily there are a lot of boutique backpack companies right now so there's a lot of options. I would recommend if you're on a tight budget to wait until s/s stuff goes on clearance (or if you're lucky get something on sale for Memorial Day. I cleaned up last year) and you can get a nicer bag within your price range. Generally, as the price goes up, the quality does too

>> No.13287922

>>13287915
yeah, I'm aware of all that.
I do prefer the zipper style over buckles and flap though, as that's what I have currently and I don't like it.

Shitload of brands lol
Would advise you go through Haven, Dover Street Market, Ssense, etc and just comb through their bags until you find brands you like. Then go to the brands' sites, look up their other stockists, Google em, browse those online stores. That's kinda a good way to learn about fashion in general. I'll be honest: I don't have Facebook or look at Tumblr/Instagram so I'm sometimes really late on brands lol
Judging you based solely on your taste, Drifter might be right up your alley

I did upload a bunch of Japanese magazines that are basically backpack catalogs lol. There's a link to the pastebin in the diy thread OP, mag is called Go Out
