Anybody have tips on pants to wear with cowboy boots? I wear Dickies with mine right now and they work fine but I want to branch out because all of my slimmer jeans have the shaft of my boots show too noticeably and it looks bad. Mainly looking for bootcut chinos/khakis.

I disagree. RRL as a brand pays incredible attention to detail regarding construction and materials, which sounds like a put-on of course, but you have to examine it in person to see. I have never seen hides as unique and of quality of grain as RRL leather. For example I've had the pictured jacket for several years now and having never treated it and having worn it in rain constantly, there is not one single flaw of cracking or unstitching, and the patina is as good as it was when I bought it. It is difficult to find similar shirt designs as high quality and durable, and their denim is outstanding. There are many similar brands (such as Kapital, Engineered Garments, Sugar Cane, Momotaro, Beams, Mister Freedom, LVC, etc) but none come as dedicated to Americana via subtlety and consistency, to western apparel as RRL- you will seldom see a single garment from any season collective that deviates from this niche, unlike most of the aforementioned brands. Then again I am a ardent fanboy so I am very biased, and I do agree that their mark-ups are often egregious.

My great grandparents worked for a traveling wild west show in the 1910s (he was a wrangler, she was a ticket girl) and the costumes perfomers wore were a big influence on current Western fashion. The wranglers and hands dressed more like how traditional working cowboys. Plain shirts, dungarees and simple leather boots. Also their tribe of "Savage Injuns" were actually a family Hawaiian paniolos that came to the states looking for ranch work. And the show was also a cover for a horse theft ring, my great grandpa did two years in the North Dakota penitentiary before getting his sentence reduced on appeal.
I really should get around to scanning the pictures, they're pretty cool.

To expand a bit more on the denim jeans, to my understanding cattlemen actually looked down upon denim jeans. Wool and cotton trousers were preferred as jeans were worn primarily by miners which was though of as lower than working cattle. It wasn't up until the beginning of the 20th century do you see an actual change in trousers. Many parts of the west took much longer, the old timers in my family were all cattlemen and ranch hands, wore boots and their hat every day till they day they died. Never once saw them in blue jeans or a straw hat for that matter

It's not so much the mining was seen as lower than cattle work, cowboys and ranch hands weren't exactly very high up the social ladder themselves, it's that denim really just isn't a good fabric when you spend most of your time outdoors. Miners and industrial workers had dry homes to go to every night, but cowboys were outdoors for weeks or months at a time. Once the cattle business switched from free range to enclosed pasturing denim slowly started to work its way into the cowboy wardrobe, but it was firmly used as workwear until practically the 1970s.
Trophy buckles are also a 20th century invention, consider belts alone didn't even become the norm until almost the 1920s. Up until that point everybody wore suspenders.

Blue jeans started working their way into western wear in the 1940s with Wrangler, which was owned by the Blue Bell Overall Co. They hired a Polish tailor to work with rodeo performers to design a pair of blue jeans specifically for rodeo use, then launched a big marketing campaign with celebrity endorsements, giveaways, radio shows, etc.

Great question. I don't know how well they would fair that far north. Never been to Indiana nor do I know anyone who owns brangus north of Oklahoma.
Our winters, down here, are rather mild. We get maybe two weeks of ice per year with little to no snow. Never had one freeze to death on my watch, but not saying it didn't happen to others.
I'm going to throw some info at you.
Pros: Resistant to heat, parasites and frequent weather changes. Can survive in places with little water or shelter. Grow rather quickly. Looking like an angus == EZ money at market. Polled. (that's important btw)
Cons: They throw large calves so you have to keep an extra eye on your yearlings. There's an alpha bitch in every pen. She will try to take you out and come back for seconds.
Honestly, I'd consult others in your area or attend any cattle raiser events before investing in brangus.
