Brainlet here. What are some great light women's or unisex fragrances I could wear as a guy? I love light sweet scents, but I obviously don't want some floral stuff or whatever.

No. All of the fragrances in OP are extremely popular, for good reason. Pre-reformulation Nuit was the best male fragrance of all time. Of all time.

Can you guys give me some resources where I can find a "translation" from fragrance note to given effect and/or vice-versa?

I mean, I know from the OP that some family of notes are more mysterious, masculine, feminine, etc., but I'd like to have more distilled (pun intended) information about notes in term of popularity, attraction to females, which are more boyish and which are more sophisticated, or oldish, what synergizes best with a preppy style or a sporty style or a more elegant wardrobe/event, etc.

I'm trying different perfumes in order to find 1-2 signature scents, but I'm quite attracted to female perfumes so I'm not objective, I need some directory to understand how women (but also, less importantly, men, since I work) would perceive me with said notes or family or notes, or which is more popular, etc.

Burberry London is a great fragrance. Even if it only lasts 4 hours max on most people, it's still held pretty highly for being a really nice scent. Wheneve rI wear it, I just carry around a little travel atomizer of it in my backpack and freshen up halfway through the day. I usually wouldn't do it because that's hitting autism levels for me, but I make the exception for London because it is that good

dolce and gabbana light blue is fresh, light and unisex; pretty poor longevity though. i would try l'homme - subtle and sweet (apple cider) but very good. or if you want a more traditional sweet or feminine scent, probably look at amber or vanilla-based scents, gourmands would fit your description except they are likely too strong and not year round.

>>13021964
depends on what you want to use it for and your climate, the ones in the OP are considered great, safe scents because they are very versatile (with the exception of LN) and genuinely crowd-pleasing. most fresh scents are pretty safe. just they have poor performance and limited versatility in certain climates

What you're asking for is rather specific and awfully subjective. The closest I can think of is that fragrance sites have articles on particular notes (for example Fragrantica has them for common notes) that describe how they're obtained, how they smell and a bit of historical background. From what you've posted, I doubt that's what you're looking for, but it might be a start. How different notes are perceived is entirely subjective and can change drastically over time, not to mention that fragrances are compositions where notes work in synergy to create something that smells different than just a sum of its ingredients.
To conclude, you're better off concentrating on what notes you like, focus on fragrances that have them and then dig into forums and reviews to see how they rate with women/crowd you're trying to impress.

>> No.13022215

I just noticed the Fragrantica AWARDS page. It has a category of best fragrance for men that women have voted for. Does it give an accurate picture of what women think smells good on a man? Is it safe to use as basic reference when shopping for fragrances?

Most likely not. You need to remember that fragheads don't accurately represent the male populace. Most guys wear Axe, Old spice and similar shit and the only two fragrances I'd consider overplayed based on how often I smell them on a daily basis are 1 Million and Sauvage. Le Male I smell on someone maybe once a month. Of course, that is based on my area only and differs elsewhere.

>>13022215
I'd say the same thing applies as to the post above. For example TdH, the top fragrance voted in that list, is often disliked by young women. As a general shopping list it will still work, just check whether the current formulation lives up to the standards.

On an unrelated note, glad to see Encre Noire receiving all that love from the community.

Very underrated frag. It’s very fresh, clean rose and citrus, but it’s not too sweet. Smells a little dark, but extremely charming. To me, it lives up to its name. I picture the devil as a dapper looking older gentleman in a red suit and top hat, and this is what he smells like.

Very safe scent, overall. I don’t think anyone would object to it. Smells very high quality.

So, this is probably going to be a series of stupid questions but I am a novice when it comes to this stuff and have never paid much attention to it before. I am looking for a few recommendations. I like woody and citrusy scents, and typically wear a fragrance during the day rather than putting one on at night before going out, those days are mostly behind me.

I use scented deodorant and scented body wash, although nothing too oppressive imo. And I smoke, although I am starting a new job soon and will likely quit (again), or at least cut back to the point where I only smoke at night at home, and on the weekends. With that in mind, should I even bother buying something new? Are all those other scents just going to overwhelm whatever I use? I feel like when my clothes smell like cologne it's just my clothes that smell, and that I myself in fact smell different. Over the years I've typically just used whatever cologne I get as a gift, the latest are jo malone lime basil and pomegranate, but I am almost out of them. I liked them quite a bit. I don't want to spent a shitload of money, ideally $150 or less.

stop smoking for one. It can seriously overpower whatever you wear. I went out with a friend last night who was wearing something really nice smelling. However, her family smokes so it really kinda killed everything after her scent dried down. It's not always the case, but ya know.

may not explicitly answer your question about cost... but I'm not sure there is a straightforward answer.

My mom loves this fragrance my dad used to wear that is about $10.
People on this thread rave about Creed fragrances that are $400 a bottle.

When it comes down to it, its more about how much you like it, how well it performs, and how much you are willing to pay. Cost =/= Quality.

I recommend always sampling before you buy.

I was on the fence about GIT when I first tried it but now it's probably my favourite of my (admittedly small) collection.

Intoxicated I tried at a department store. Smells like A*Men but a little better, definitely not worth the price increase.

You can get some nice pieces from Raf or Yohji or whoever you like. Fuck, you can also get some rare Supreme items if you're into that streetwear trash and still save a lot of cash. Or just save more and buy a Tom Ford suit instead of his fragrances. I don't know, man, I just think it's dumb...

$2800 is a lot of money to waste on fragrance and I can guarantee that you won't like many of them, probably even hate them. For example, I doubt anyone here likes Kouros or Tuscan Leather, those perfumes are usually only appreciated by men in their 50s and older.

Are you retarded? How do people like u survive ?

Don't fucking spend that money on fragrances if it's not disposable income; especialy on things you have never tried before. Most of the things you listed are designer fragrances so you can go into a sephora and tried them for free. For the niche stuff, go on ebay or notino.com and buy 1-2ml sample vials and try them.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Polo Modern Reserve?
There was Polo Modern Reserve until a few years ago, it was clean, fresh, pine, mint, cool spring foresty, slight leather whiff, slightly masculine feel but not overtly so, slightly different to mainstream but also modern and normal, safe for office, long longevity, not-sweet, not-dense, not-heavy, not-annoying, not-soapy, not-old-fashioned, not-overpriced, not-synthetic, not-pretty-boy-with-flowers, not-feminine, not-sweaty.

That scent was very average cool foresty, but in hindsight it was hard to click all those checklists.
It's discontinued now and remaining bottles on ebay have unfair prices. What were Ralph Lauren thinking.

So try these instead;

Lush - breath of a god (Smoky cool mint green gives you dark cool forest imagination, plus some sweet fruits to offset the seriousness, but why is it expensive than Chanel)

Dsquared2 - He Wood Rocky Mountain Wood(I didn't smell yet but the reviews are good)

Polo Green (Modern reserve plus old-fashioned sweaty thick heavy leather & tobacco, feel too heavy, sweaty and not really 21st century)

CdG - Laurel (more of a fresh tree leaf smell)

Acqua di Parma - Cedro di Taormina (I didn't smell it but generally their fragrances to be nice fresh natural smelling, should be fine)

>>13023686
Inexpensive quality fragrances could be held for merely $30, but if you have specific description in your mind price can go off the roof.
For example Guerlain Vetiver is a clean fresh green vetiver with tobacco, somewhat boring and cerebral. It can be bought inexpensive.

Lalique Encre Noire is cheap too. It does dark and oppressing vetiver very well.

But if you want super-smooth fresh vetiver with French elegance, you pay Chanel $350 for 6.8oz Sycomore. Sort like that.

>>13024062

Warm and suitable for winter and maybe cool fall nights. I was obsessed with this frag in the winters of like 2012-2015. It can be cloying in warm weather. On my skin the honey is the main note and the tobacco lingers around for a few hours. It's pretty straightforward and dries down to honey/tonka/"amber" for me. This kind of reintroduced me to "sweet" scents after writing them off, thinking they would all be like Pink Sugar or VW Princess.

One of my friends finds the honey note was too powdery and too old womanish, which is fair because I was like 20 at the time.

Jazz Club is interesting but just be wary of the connotations of smelling like alcohol. I really liked Jazz Club before I bought it, but the Margiela bottle distributes more than a sample atomizer does. On my skin it just becomes too boozy in that amt. It's the target audience as well as the marketing strategy, the price gap in terms of the raw ingredients, bottles and packaging isn't that big. One part of the industry targets the large portion who just want to smell good for a reasonable price. The other targets the small portion that want to smell unique and interesting and are therefore willing to pay a higher price (in some cases they prefer it that way as it increases the exclusivity). Smells like my deodorant. I don't know why some people liked it. Perhaps there's something I'm missing and someone could point me out?

>Creed Green Irish Tweed
Clean, green and safe.

>Roja Dove Scandal Pour Homme
Too medicinal for me.

>Killian Intoxicated
It does smells like coffee which I really liked but there's something else that putting me off. It's probably too dark for my taste.

>Atelier Cologne Cafe Tuberosa
Oh man, the initial blast of coffee just blew me away. Then comes the cig smell and then very smooth rose. Can't decide if the rose is too feminine. I wish the coffee last longer and I would definitely get a bottle if so. Also I sprayed on my body before I went to sleep, now that I just woke up I can smell a hint of sweet chocolate (deep skin though).

redpill me on pic related, is it "objectively good"?
I've never been much into fragrances, because I like being low key, but I got this from my girl for Christmas and I'm quite enjoying it.

Smells like 85-90% similar to Sauvage, but smoother, with a hint of that Luna Rossa lavender DNA. Didn't test it extensively but from what I smelled I liked it.

The only Boss Bottled worth spending money on. Sacrifices the freshness of the original in favor of the woody spicy notes for more longevity (6 - 8 hours).

Vintage formula of the original might have oakmoss and perform better than current formula (3 - 4 hours).

Parfums De Marly Layton is supposed to smell similar, except beastly and niche. I've never tried it.

>>13028268
It's good if you like vetiver. It projects for 2 - 3 hours, remains as a noticeable skin scent until you scrub it off. Same shit with Extrême.

Toughts on this? I got a SMW sample but I feel the performance is lacking. Most reviews say this has a lot better performance and half of them even say they prefer this over the creed so for 1/5th of the price it seems like a no brainer. Rasasi makes some pretty good stuff from what I've seen.
I'm probably going to check out pineapple vintage too.

I'm looking for a warm weather frag but I'm not a big fan of most citruses so open to other stuff. Preferably under ~100 but I can go double that if I like it enough.

i used to frequent these threads a few years ago

i had a few thousand dollars worth of colognes

i've given most of them away, i only have cheap shit now that i was too embarrassed to give away that i don't use

all i can say is don't get fragrance for other people, most people just like a very clean scent with no projection. if you're trying to get a girl with fragrances you're doing it wrong.

Going to a concert on NYE with a girl a briefly flirted with at another concert. We're definitely going to be dancing together and I'd say chances of a hookup are high.

I was hoping my Wonderwood would arrive by then, but alas, it hasn't, so I have to go with one of my samples.

Should I go with YSL L'homme for its warmer, more sophisticated scent. Or Sauvage for its panty dropping quality?

>>13028194
I don't find the two to be very similar. I remember Dylan Blue being quite sweet and smooth. Whereas sauvage is more clean and spicy.

+1 to YSL L'Homme.

Based on your criteria, I'd also highly recommend that you check out Dior Homme. It's a very soft, slightly sweet scent that's a bit woody, with amber and iris.My fav of all time.
