Definitely. There is plenty of stuff from berserk that won't come off as weeb even by people who don't know what it is. You could see >>13014634 as an example.

Pic related is an example of poor placement (imo) but it was translated really well. This is just an example to show Miura's work can be translated.

I'd probably get a behelit but incorporated into something else. Anything but the branded symbol or Guts walking away from Griffith.

You're right, it's neo-traditional, but there's a bit more to it, like stylistic choices, like the gloss on the bottle (more emphasis on shadows, more refining/details in the designs, the perspective doesn't change). Color palette has gained more variation - there is still artists that do neo-traditionals that are chock full of bright colors, but there's also lots that do black and grey and, more recently, single color (black and grey with, for example, red).

Tattoo artist here, feel free to ask me any questions, I'll be here a couple of hours.

I see a lot of misinformed people in these threads, hopefully I can help. Nothing beats doing your own research and having your own original ideas, but try to follow your artist's advice.

(Tattoo artist as in professional tattoo artist working in a studio with daily customers, not a beginner who tattoos for fun in a kitchen).

Pic isn't my work, but something neat, since I don't want to post my Insta on 4chan.

Are you skeptical about people who bring in non-tattoo related art as reference claiming it's theirs? Like, are you concerned you may accidentally copy somebody's elses work?

99/100 times it's obvious when the artwork belongs to a client or not.

If it doesn't, then depending on the subject I will either use it (examples: classical art, common symbols, video game subjects, etc) or I'll find something similar or design it myself in Photoshop (examples of stuff I wouldn't do exactly as presented: flash or tattoos from another artist, art or drawings from a currently active artist). For serious projects I would take someone's idea and present them with something I want to do / will do a good job of.

I'm sure its happened more than once, and most people don't understand or care enough about this. Sometimes it's just easier to just print out a celebrity's tattoo or the first image result for "infinity symbol family" since these kind of jobs do nothing for my portfolio nor would I ever post them on Instagram, but at the end of the month they pay the bills and literally no one cares.

Every decent artist does. Most still do work they're not interested in. The more talented and popular artists are lucky to only work within their style. Some artists are "4x4", of which some are great and others are terrible.

In my case, this lately, I like only working with black and ideas that are simple, bold and look good from far away without being too cliche traditional (see pic related). It's a bit of a meme trendy style so I'm still trying to evolve and develop my own stuff. For now, I'm forced to do a bit of everything.

More at his work, I think I'm too blinded by the idea to be subjective. He's a weird guy to deal with though. I know it may well be the language barrier, but I've never had an artist who had already drawn a design then talk about changing it so dramatically. I mean I requested a small change but he;s away redrawing the whole thing which I find unusual. I'm willing to see it on the day, but it;s not what I'm used to.

Oh yes, I've been carting that one around for a number of years. I've slipped a bit now but I'm a strong swimming and enjoy freediving. It's a moray head stuck on a japanese eel body, because I wasn;t specific and we both had a different idea in our heads. he freehanded it straight on though, so no harm done. It;s certainly unique.

Maybe look into some blackwork instead? Or a thick band somewhere on the arm so you know what you're getting into. You need to be mentally prepared for having a black arm the rest of your life.

It;s a little frustrating because the original idea is so good. I've tried to make it clear to him I like the text in particular, even though I don;t usually go in for that. It;s partially my fault because it was intended to cover the stomach, but I've shifted it to the top of the leg. Prime real-estate, if I don;t like it I don;t have the space left to not walk so I'm more worried about it than I usually would be.

It's hard to pick a favorite.

Some of my first "big" tattoos that turned out alright filled me with satisfaction the next day when I saw the photos again (first few big pieces are a huge mental drain and dissatisfaction when you're new - still happens to me now even). I always enjoy ideas that are different, on genuine people, and within my style.

Can't say I have a favourite yet. I'm relatively new (2 years apprentice in the studio, 1 year as a resident plus the many years of working around and being involved with the tattoo scene).

2. Get in contact
3. Use any kind of images, can be already existing tattoos, artwork, anything
4. If you don't have images but you're flexible and a fan of said artist's work, just describe what you want
5. Request any changes you want, or don't be afraid to say you don't like it
6. If the artist refuses to modify anything within reason, I would back out, I don't like "rockstar" tattooers
7. Be realistic about what you want and what you could expect from the artist
8. Communicate properly, be clear with what you want, but don't be annoying
9. Don't be a time waster!
