They can look good, and also quite Viking, ancient European tribal, or generally Medieval/Renaissance/1600s-1800s, if you fit a stereotype enough. If the facial hair is thin, as with any color, it may not be ideal. I think mine is mostly thin, and so light (especially the mustache, which is white, the rest of the beard is a little darker) that it appears transparent, so I mostly stick with a clean-shave, up through two or three days' stubble at times.
