lunarcore is part techwear, which is experiencing its moment right now, part milsurp, which is fairly timeless

i think one of the nice things about lunarcore is that it borrows from/is inspired by such a broad oeuvre from many decades, cultures, genres. so the style already has a story that's familiar to most and yet it's not confined to a strictly historical catalog...it's an evolving "costume" and one that is constantly redefined and very relevant to contemporary society.

now contrast that to americana, where the references are to an older era so it's more limited in it's space to experiment. that's not to say that backwards-looking styles are stale or don't allow for reinterpretation and creativity...it's more that this style accomplishes something cool, which is its very core quality of both looking backwards and forwards

I don’t understand it as much. Is the point meant to look like you’re part astronaut part hype-beast? I don’t mean hype beast in a bad way, but it’s the only term I can drum up whenever I see the shoe choices.

Is there any underlying ideas for the choices? Whenever I think astronaut suits I think utilitarian. However, I cannot really connect these two together as well because of this. So I’m guessing it’s just based off of the color palettes and base theme? What’s up with all of the pockets in much of the clothing, and does it serve a purpose?

Recently the look has become a bit more formulaic with bomber/jacket, cargos, boots being the norm. That's fine but pretty bland considering the initial intent of lunarcore was to make people think for themselves and develop a look based around ideas and nebulous feelings rather than a set of choices.

I think ideally lunarcore is meant to evoke crewmen on a space freighter or residents of a harsh alien planet. Blue collar is the goal rather than some sort of sterile future utopian colony, which has been done to death in the media.

As for the shoes, tall utilitarian boots tend to fit the aesthetic well. It just so happens that Nike released a few hyped up sneaker boots recently that work in lunarcore fits. Some more hypebeast designers like KTZ have also released very futuristic spacey footwear in the past few years. If these have been adopted by the lunarcore crowd I think it's more because they have design details (ribbing, buckles, straps, height, palette) that fit with the look we're going for.

Pockets are just another common feature of utilitarian military clothing, which a lot of sci-fi costuming is based around. John Mollo, the costume designer for the first three star wars movies, was a military history buff with no costuming history prior to the trilogy. His use of military gear and inspiration from all across history influenced at least one generation of designers and captured the minds of most people who saw the films. For better or for worse cargo pockets are now a key feature in most sci-fi works. Lunarcore may choose to incorporate a lot of pockets that are not actually used but that's not really any different from Tom Dick or Harry on the street rocking a pair of cargo pants. You think he actually fills all those pockets?

this new wave of posters don't have the same kind of background and knowledge so they show up into these threads and say 'this sounds cool how do I into lunar? bomber and cargos? got it'

there are a few great people here discussing and providing inspo but it does take time and effort to build an outside the box wardrobe or even one fit
most of the actual fits posted here are from people trying to establish a basic starting point

I figure if productive discussion keeps up we'll eventually start to see more interesting fits from people

for me, the jury rigging DIY and creative aspect of lunarcore is the most compelling part of this style. which is somewhat antithetical to a lot of these guides... i mean, they are ok as a launching off point but the style naturally invites imagination so it's a shame if people just stop after acquiring a bomber and cargo pants.

i would highly recommend thrift stores as a way to get into this style. in part because you can find some relevant 80's and 90's era pieces for dirt cheap in the forgotten pile, and a lot of influences came out of those periods. but also because recycling random pieces and figuring out how they all work together is, at least to me, essential to what i think lunarcore is all about

They tend to work their way down throughout the day, but I just readjust every now and then. I have a couple other pairs of gas masks that are slimmer and have stiffer material and those stacks tend to stay where I want them. Gravity is going to do its thing, but I think the best best is a long inseam and stiff material.

There's also this imgur post I saw. Dude duct tapes the inside of his jeans to maintain stacks. Pretty damn goofy, but I'm sure it works.

lol that seems ridiculous but on second thought, i have a jacket with elasticated sleeves that stacks super nicely on the arms...and that's basically just an elastic band sewn inside the same way the tape is.

yeah my pants are long but stretchy, and i think short of starching the stacks or something, this structural hack will actually work. besides what is more lunarcore than duct tape and clothes lol. thanks for the suggestion!

ok as per outlander's suggestion, i did a (very bad) tape job on one leg, and then moved around a little to see how well the taped stacks would hold up. pretty good! i used lab tape instead of duct tape (only thing around) and it didn't hold very well. ill try again with real duct tape when i get home

in case it's not obvious, the left leg in the picture is the taped one. the migrating stack issue is obvious on the right leg - i end up having my weirdly blocky calf (gf wont let me skip leg day) stick out once the stacks dissipate. but im calling it a success. i only taped along the seams, but im sure if i do the whole leg, it will be even more resistant to stack movement.

I think duct tape will definitely look better, but it's cool that it worked. Another thing you can do is tuck your pants into your socks when you wear boots. Looks cool and it'll push up the bottom of your pants a little bit higher so it will help with the stacks. I usually have my socks a little over an inch above the top of my boots.

no help there sorry. I would avoid the AF1s also because you are a big guy and they will make you look bigger and shorter since they are big. I would say just really dial in those palladiums. tighten the laces really tighh. something about how you are wearing them with your pants just doesn't look right. might be your passive cucky hand in pocket stance. since you are a bulky guy you need to stand in a powerful stance. you want to convey a message that you could put a beating on someone. that is the key to all menswear.

i suppose a question you should be asking is, why are you attempting this combo? on the surface, i'd say no, that shirt wouldn't make much sense with a lunar style. hawaiian shirts just kind of connote a very different time/sensibility than a stereotypical lunar outfit.

now if you were doing it to purposefully play on the contrast, then maybe...but you'd have to really be very clearly contrasting it with pants/boots that are super lunar and distant from the hawaiian theme. there's always the risk that people won't "get it" and just see the outfit as disjointed.

hmm now how to pull it off with a hawaiian shirt, specifically? really depends on the pattern and color, and hawaiian shirts can be quite restrained to insanely campy, so it's tough to say without having an image of the shirt. i think the buttons may be problematic...haven't found many reference images from that era with button up shirts. a lot more of them had like this polo shirt looking thing, that's very fitted. if you can find a hawaiian polo it might be easier to adapt. but again, the pattern is important, and tricky. it shouldn't be so bold as to become the focal point of the outfit, but more like an element that adds to the mood, i think?

it's a good challenge to think about...i can definitely see where the influences cross. now i have a thousand tabs open with retro space pictures!
