ok well, the op pic is a good example of a horribly kept beard desu. you need to let the beard grow without trimming it for at least a few weeks first, but then you have to go to work. and keeping the beard kept is alot of work. you have to constantly trim, it's like growing a hedge in your front yard, you can either be the Portugese guy whose 10x10 foot lawn looks immaculate, or you can be the idgaf guy with a 100x100 lawn who lets weeds grow in it and never trims anything. except extrapolate that onto your fucking face. that's how abhorrent an unkept beard looks on a man. like that neighboar you have who you never see leave the house and his lights are always out but you hear weird noises coming from the backyard sometimes.

not saying the an unkept beard is a death sentence but you have to manage it if you want to wear it, and stille xpect to maintain your desirability

Depends on what kind of face shape you want. If you want a longer-looking face (perhaps to indicate similarity to a horse in certain aspects) you'll want to trim your beard close at the sides and keep it longer in front.
Always, always, always keep you neck shaved, and do it regularly. It'll look fine for two or three days but once it reaches serious peach fuzz territory it has to go.
Pic related is me. I use a standard trimmer with an adjustable guard. Sideburns are about 5mm, goatee is 15mm.

you shouldn't be giving advice based on that beard you have there. this is a perfect example of someone who thinks they have a beard, when in reality it's just "hair growth" on your face. theres a big difference.

also awful. theres maybe 10% of men who correctly wear and keep their beard. just like women with makeup, theres like 10% who actually know what they are doing, and not just in a simple enhancement sense

but in a sense where if you are naturally attractive, then having the properly shaped beard/proper makeup application, will take you into "stop and stare" territory, where the beard/makeup is the finishing accent on the package.

the only men who have proper beards are actors who are getting professional styled, or the 10% who have just figured it out themselves.

There's a difference between growing the beard in a sort of controled way and not touching it at all. The same way a homeless guy's long hair looks different from a model's or rockstar.
I'd recommend going to a good, specialized barber for advice, you can cut to a line among the cheeks and shape it up a bit for some more striking results, depends on what OP is going for.
