I'm not even a professional photographer actually. Grew up in Brussels and work at a creative agency as multimedia artist. Kangol contacted us for an assignment and I went to Paris to help coordinate it. They were very happy with the results and I worked with them again. Their model was actually the one who recommended me for this shoot so that's how it all got to happen.

1930s British Suburbs are the peak of low-density development and have never been matched desu senpai.

>modernist planning, vernacular materials (and the occasional mock-tudor flair) - innovative yet inoffensive
>nice big rooms and solid brick walls
>reasonably sized drive and garden - neither cramped boxes or supermarket carpark-tier deserts of empty grass and gravel
>fireplaces
>still manage to be reasonable walkable, cycleable, and have solid public transport links

All social-critical theory is based in deliberately erasing history in order to spawn a false myth of creation for the masses and a true genesis only for the intelligentsia ruling caste. Hence it is in the interest of the borderline fluxus-of-architecture brutalist to piss on, shit on, and rape, anything that alludes to identity or inheritance for anyone but the philosophical marrano, and to crush the past with a future where everyone obeys in harmony in structures that could only be spawned by peaceful and prosperous submission to the chosen people.

That said this is not all of brutalism. But knee-jerk attacking anything from before the year 1900 is a telltale sign a social-critical marxist parasite having infiltrated the discussion.

The public support is overwhelmingly turning in favour of traditional. Such is the case that one revitalization (i'll look up which soon) of a property belonging to a saudi prince here was canceled and a traditional architect was called in to make his project.

Ugh, all those anons ejaculating over huge blocks of concrete, I want you to know you disgust me.
Sure, there are some nice examples of brutalist architecture or socialist modernism. But for the most part, this style of urbanisation wreaked havok on the cities and its citizens. Sure, it might look exotic, or monumental, but it completely disregards the people living there.

Some of you may see pic related as aesthetic. But if you ever grew up among this type of architecture it conjures nothing but images of extreme poverty, terrible living conditions and pathological families.

>> No.12883443

>>12883426
It's not like the style of architecture is to blame for the state's inability to provide basic necessities for its citizens or the fact that housing was so scarce you frequently had to cram entire families (or even multiple families) into one or two rooms.

You can also appreciate Soviet military music or socialist realism without admiring the system that produced them.

I can see where you are coming from, but I have to disagree on the architecture part.
Soviet architecture wasn't just bad because state couldn't maintain it. Their very design was flawed. For example, all of the soviet flats were built in an extremely cheap way, with very small living spaces and very thin walls. Their segmented nature makes it very difficult to inspect their structural integrity and it is quite common these days to see blocks of flats literally coming apart at the seams.

>> No.12883469

This is an imageboard so of course people will look at things more superficially. People here aren't architects so they just care about the aesthetics. Same way people might find a car cool looking that actually drives bad and has bad reliability.

>> No.12883481

>>12883460
And it's not just the materials, the whole "style" originates from a premisse of deconstructing previous tradition and doing away with it.

It has dissonance between starting from blank and being actively opposed to tradition. The first one is a false premisse, as it starts taking all that is traditional and attempts to shit on it.

Another lie, to cry and try to convince us that their focus is on form follows function. Were that true, a box with a roof and doors and windows would always suffice, not a crazy unscrupulous shape which, to be honest, is just shitty ornamentation.

If you want humble or bragging you can find in traditional styles. If you wabt modernism you just have crumble

>> No.12883482

>>12883460
I didn't grow up in a place like that, although I did study and work with quite a few people who got out of the Eastern Bloc before it fell. So I want to be clear that I'm not trying to defend the USSR or its system, at all. I can't stand it when I see people glamorizing what really was, from all their stories and everything I've read, an almost comically shitty place to live.

But in fairness, my understanding is that most of those places were thrown up very quickly and were quite explicitly *not* meant to be permanent dwellings, but as a temporary fix for the post-war housing shortage - more just places to people to live for a few years, to get them out of the even worse pre-war communal apartments that most of them were living in, while better apartments were being built. I'd guess they fulfilled their purpose about as well as could be expected during their intended service life. It is of course the fault of the state that the permanent apartments never materialized and they just kept fucking using the temporary ones decades after they were supposed to be vacated and (I assume) detonated.

>> No.12883489

>>12883460

Not to mention, all of the developments were centrally planned. Soviet cities were designed to be utopian and modern. Huge blocks of flats flat surrounded by parks and highways. Doesn't sound bad as an idea. But parks in in Eastern Europe turn to mud, during autumn and winter and these days serve as nothing but parking lots. And those huge highways? They were built with public transport in mind and are not able to sustain the increase in car ownership. The huge distances between building made it very difficult to get anywhere on foot, even if the population density was relatively low.

My point is that soviet architecture and urban planning might seem utilitarian, but it's actually the exact opposite. They completely disregarded how people live and were so hell bent on creating an utopia that they didn't even consider how those cities might look within 10 years.

Disgust was a strong word. So I apologize for that. But I've been seeing a certain trend on the internet, where rich millennials from western countries fetishize soviet poverty. Then I go outside and I'm reminded it will be another 50 years before we can make our cities functional again.

>>12883481
Yes, you are very correct. Not to mention, soviets had a tendency to remove ornaments from historical buildings (or whatever remained of them after WW2), completely demolish huge swaths of the cities, or build modernist nightmares right next to historical architecture.

>>12883482
No offence taken at all and I definitely didn't take your comment as an attempt at glamorizing soviet states.

You are very correct in saying that a lot of the soviet housing was temporary. In fact, I would actually that what the soviets did in the late 40's and early 50's in my own country (Poland) was actually quite impressive. Before the war we had millions of people living in villages with no running water or electricity. The early soviet developments increased the living standards for the huge percentage of the population and their effort to rebuild some of the cities (like Warsaw) were incredible.
But what they have done architecturally in the 60's and 70's is truly a crime. That's where most of the cheap housing really comes from and that's where they would just plow through with developments disregarding any future concerns.

I fucking love modern architecture. Here the Netherlands we have shitty "historical" villages and towns out of medieval times. They are ugly they are not modern, no beautiful glass buildings, no IT jobs, only this boring small-town-life (everyone knows everyone, no diversity, etc.)

They should be destroyed imo, they actually cost us money. Especially throwing money and restaurations of castles and other boring buildings costs billions of euros. These building are not energy efficient and so they also contribute to climate change.

We should start by demolishing these old crappy buildings and invest in new infrastructure, climate neutral buildings and sustainable energy. This is the future and which will make more money instead of just "m-muh culture".

Unfortunately, what "the public" thinks as cool is usually not very effay.

Just look at Russia and you'll see that people haven't learned anything in 70 years. Still same tasteless stucco classicism as before.

most houses from that era are in brick or painted solid colour or solid colour on pebbledash (or a mix of the two), raw pebbledash is pretty rare

The Nazi's weren't trying to protect the Medieval architecture or German culture they wanted to replace all of that with shitty brutalist/fascist crap. Germany still has more Medieval architecture than anything you can find in Britain or France though the latter is second best, pic related is literally a time capsule
