first off what i did was collect a ton of inspo on my hard drive. you can use pinterest, instagram, 4chan, reddit, styleforum, whatever. once I had a few hundred pictures of outfits i liked I started narrowing down stuff that i knew would look good on my body, or i feel like i could pull off. You should notice certain items repeating (for instance I love patterns, especially stripes, so i noticed a lot of striped shirts in my album, even across multiple styles). I started by copping the pieces that repeated a lot and that i liked the look of the most, and then building the rest of my wardrobe around those. but you can't stop there because, at least for me, my style is always developing. My tastes change and my closet reflects that. The key thing is that my look changes based on what i like, rather than what is trendy. and since all those pictures you saved are hopefully based on looks you like and not just what other people tell you looks good, you start to really get an idea of what you want your style to be and how you can be set yourself apart (if that's what you're going for) from everybody else.

just don't copy people

it's that easy

if you see some cool sunglasses, don't think, "Where can I buy those? I'm going to wear them next week."

Instead, keep them in your memory. One day you might find some different sunglasses that remind you of those old ones. Buy those instead.

Fashion is the art of being inspired, not reproducing.
