Hey guise I'm currently bidding on a pair of VINTAGE 14-eyelet steel-toe'd Doc Martens 1914s. I own two pairs of Docs, 1460s made in China and 1490s made in Thailand. 1490s fit very snuggly, 1460s are a bit more roomy and have a wider feeling to them. Neverthless, I size UK9 / US10 on Asian Docs, and I've heard that the vintage models of Docs (pre-2003, not the modern vintage-models) all should be sized one up to accommodate for the more rounder toe-cap. How true is this, should I just hunt for a pair of UK10 / US11-sized Docs or keep bidding on the size UK9 / US10-ones? Do older british Docs fit differently when compared to modern Asian Docs and modern Vintage-Docs?

The "ranger"-model is a pretty universal model with the stitching, the toe-cap and the eyelets and whatnot. Usually you can easily get these from different stores and outlets, the price point varies heavily but I've seen the exact same-looking boots too around festivals and gigs aswell, even when they might come from different manufacturers or brands. Probably because they can acquired easily and cheapily, a cheap pair is usually like 40-60€, the more expensive ones last longer and are generally of a higher quality but the cheaper models are easier to find and acquire (you can get them at alternative-stores and not just from ordering online from the manufacturer).

When I was a teen and getting into the scene of punk and metal music around my area (Finland), you could easily see rangers at almost every gig and/or meeting there was. I always wore Docs though, but most punks and metalheads wore ones bought from huge retailers like EMP.de or sites like Stunt-man. A pair of rangers like that were cheap, only around 50€ or 60€ and they were durable and comfortable for what they were, a rougher alternative to sneakers and skate-shoes that more emos and screamo-kids liked to wear.

I think Truman Boot Co boots are fucking gorgeous, but I'm having trouble pulling the trigger.

I will make this harder by also recommending looking at White's Boots and Nick's Boots at that price point. It's been explained to me that White/Nick is more like end level work beater boot while Truman is high quality but more slated towards fashion considerations, above red wing in style and quality as is. I have seen some Truman QC issues on /r/goodyearwelt, which is surprisingly not that autistic for reddit.

The brown ones look a bit more "worn", but they're definitely both more comfy than actual vintage boots and they seem to run pretty true to size.
The only kind of odd thing is they add some height to you. Seemingly more than other boots I have anyway. That can be a bit strange getting used to.
Overall though, they're my favorite boots now.

2 pairs of Asian Docs, and black engineer boots.

The first pair of Docs is a used pair of 1460s that I got for 30€, the second are a pair of 1490s I got last October while visiting New York. Beat to shit, the tread has rubbed down almost completely and I need to take them to a cobbler again to fix a hole that came up during a pit when I went to see Suicidal Tendencies.

>> No.12585634

Get the meme boots or a used pair of those, should be easier on your wallet aswell to see whether you dig boots or not.

>> No.12585657

>>12585390
Greasy, greasy, greasy. Hi-shine is the shit that they use for Asian Docs, here's why hi-shine sucks dick;

>hi-shine leather is coated with concoctions similar to plastic to give that plastic-y shine, you can only really give hi-shine leather a good shine but no conditioning will be right for it
>when hi-shine cracks, it is non-redeemable. This is true with all leathers, cracks stay on leather but on decent leather you can oil and condition these cracks to keep them from getting wors, a,k.a cracking entirely open, something that occurs with Docs and other cheap boots with hi-shine-leather fairly often since the leather just keeps getting cruddier on spots of heavy stress, like behind the toe-cap. Hi-shine doesn't take balsam or leather oils in, the cracks just keep getting worse and worse
>hi-shine isn't really waterproof, thus the inevitable cracks will only take in more water and dirt, weakening the leather more and more
>you'll never get a sexy patina on your leather with hi-shine, only ugly cracks on the leather

Now, I trust that Solovair uses something a bit more sturdy than the stuff Asian Docs use, but I'd still go with greasy since you have the option. Greasy leather is leather that has been conditioned during the manufacturing process to make it more waterproof and sustainable towards these cracks. Most motorcycling boots are often greasy leather for this reason, greasy leather takes in balsam more nicely aswell. I used saddle grease on both my Docs with hi-shine leather and my greasy engineer boots, the engineer boots sucked up the conditioning grease within minutes, while I needed to wipe a good portion of the tiny amount I spilled on my Docs of it, since the leather was just not taking the grease in. I didn't use the entire bucket of the stuff, only a tea-spoonful of it on both boots.

All boots require care, but greasy leather is more receptible of this care. hi-shine is all shine but no function.

TL;DR: Greasy leather, godspeed Anon.

This is not the board to go to if you want to get a non biased opinion on Redwings. The hype backlash was very strong a few years ago and it has not quite subsided yet, this board hatred of them is a bigger meme than almost every other boards continued appreciation of them.

The truth is they are no longer considered to be in vogue. The "mah Americana workwear brown and indigo" trend has waned a great deal. That's not to say it's a bad look, it's just not gonna earn you any favors on here since this board leans towards the contemporary and contrary.

Quality wise, you'll hear everything from they're garbage to they're fantastic, more so the former on here. Really though, price to quality, they're just about where they should be.

The leather is processed to the point of being basically plastic, they crack and split really quickly. I say go for them if you want but don't expect too much, probably best off going for solovair if you're gonna get one of their classic designs.

Opinions on Oak Street Bootmakers? Looking into buying a black boot, something with a plain toe-cap and a modest profile. I already have a pair of iron rangers in amber for a few years and they've aged wonderfully but they are a bit boxy. I already have a pair of doc marten arthurs in their hi shine so a more natural matte look. Basically looking for an in between.
