How awful is the fashion industry currently and how cruel is it towards hopeful designers?

Just got out of high school; was salutatorian and had great marks but I really appreciate fashion as an art form. How screwed would I be if I were to go into fashion and try to "make it?" What's the ideal path?

Awful advice.

OP wants to make his own clothing, not be a corporate zombie

The "ideal" path would be to have an in at a fashion house and work your way up.

There are ways to go independent and that involves way more money -- which helps if you come from a rich background, like CCP.

Ok well,

Fashion is not art so stop thinking about it that way

And to make it in fashion as a designer you need connections or a shit ton of capital also uh actually being talented helps but isnt required ;)

this

I was Valedictorian and in college it doesn't matter. No one gives a shit. A few of my friends were also Valedictorians at their own high schools
