You're exactly right. If you want to prep it up, you can go seersucker, critter, madras or patchwork madras for the shorts. Make sure to get some nantucket reds.

Dock shorts for more casual attire.

9" inseam is the absolute longest your shorts should be, and that is only if you are 6'+.

I agree with most of this, and I'll probably never wear jeans with a jacket, but I've never had a problem with oxfords and jeans, much less tassel loafers. Also, pocket squares are not formal items, so there is no reason not to have one, regardless of the rest of the attire. I'll always have a pocket square in my breast pocket, if given the option.

Really depends on the host's request. If they don't want a formal wedding (which they probably should) then you don't have to, but I'd suggest dressing business casual (real business casual, e.g. casual suit or jacket and odd trousers) or business formal any way.
