Yeah bad teachers and most people think it's a useless skill to daily life. Some of it is pretty useless but other parts of it can be really helpful. Personally I just think it's boring to do and I think most of it falls into the first category

Speaking to "a quirky math major gf" - all I can say is that every math/engineering/non-brain-dead girl I've talked to seems to enjoy hearing about combinatorics/graph theory and pretty much all advanced topics in linear algebra.

Literally wear whatever the fuck you want - you're a human being, you have your own thoughts and feelings, as long as you feel like you express those in how you dress...

all you need to do is start a conversation.
start with what she's studying.
relate it to something you're studying or a class you've taken.
get her number.
say goodbye.
hit her up.
get coffee, have her over for wine, talk to her, if you like her then smash her and if she likes you enough the GF part will fall in place naturally.
