Are a pair a decent USA made red wing really worth almost 300 bucks?

>> No.12438238

>>12438195

I'd say alone theyre worth $200 max. If you really like them, $250. If you believe in supporting american workers/are buying into the made in America hertige or whatever then $300.

If you don't really like the design and the company then no.

I work in the oilfield and the best pair of boots I've owned were Oliver's. I've owned timberland, redwing, Justin, Carolina, and another pair of red wings

Everyday use with lots of walking, squatting, immersion in oil and water and brine- Oliver lasted almost a year, Justin lasted 3 weeks, Carolina 2 months, red wings 1 month, timberland 6 months

Bootcare I used to try and rub my boots everyday with some oil, either hydraulic oil or 15-40w but I stopped doing that. I mainly would just use the boot scraper by the hotel front door to get the mud off.

>boot care, hydraulic oil
Pls no.
Even something as harmless as Vaseline has a very slightly negative effect on leather, you're torturing those boots, you wanna be using natural oils on them, mineral oil, mink oil, leather oils and polishes. Not just a bit of left over twostroke mix you had in the shed

>> No.12438372

>>12438361
Lol yeah that's why I stopped. Legit it'd be like a 30minute ordeal every night to clean those things just to get them to a state where I could oil them.

I originally just hoped that they would be saturated with oil an last forever and just replace the sole/heel as needed but that was no Bueno and also odor control was a factor.

You pretty much sealed the boots in thick grime and grease, the leather would have no chance to breathe or ventilate and probably grew all sorts of fungus, mold and mildew. Honestly, what did you expect using that shit?

It can look off putting depending on what pants you wear. Also the straps are pretty shit-tier and hard to maneuver. M77s are pretty great.
The fit is nice, though a little roomy in the toes for me. Generally they are a size too big to compensate for big socks, so you might want to go for a size smaller than usual.
Break in kind of goes in stages. New they are pretty stiff and can be kinda uncomfortable. They will get a btt better after about a week of use and a lot better after some use and some polishing.

I broke them in a kind of specific way that is recommended by a lot of M77 users. What I did was dunk them in water for about an hour, then put them on and walk with them until they were dry again. This made them fit my feet pretty much perfectly, but they were still kind of stiff. After some polish and treatment they softened up and now they are really comfy. So I'd say after about a month they were getting really comfortable to use.

Some tips I can give from experience is to get a nice in-sole. Mine had none and I got some nice ones, now I can just stand around in them for hours. Second tip is to lace them like pic related, skipping the lower hooks. This keeps them from getting too stiff around the ankle.

Lacks in character? What the fuck does that even mean? The standard 8-11 eyelet boots that Solovair make look almost exactly the same as Docs, just a differently coloured stitching on the sole. And yeah, the """"unique yellow stiching"""" on Docs fades over time, the stitching on my 1490s stitching whatsoever after just 7 months of use. Solovairs are made with full-grain leather, they'll last longer and they're apparently easier to break in than the current chink-made Docs that still get stamped with "DUURRRRR BRITAIN DUURRRRRR"-stamp of approval. If the stitching or the pull-tag on the lip of the boot is the thing that holds you from going Solovair, then you shouldn't probably get a pair at all.

TL;DR: just get Solovairs.
