Looking for feedback:
I'm looking to get a new piece on my Irish heritage. It's always been a major part of my family since my parents and grandparents came immigrated here. Getting a tattoo guide for beginners

A tattoo artist will charge you one of two ways:

1. Charge per hour
2. Charge per design

If you bring a design that you have already to the artist, The artist will charge you per hour.

If the artist has designed a tattoo for you, or you are choosing one of their flash designs (pre-drawn designs in an artists folio), they will usually set a pre determined price based on the size of the tattoo and how complex the design is.

A good tattoo artist without an overinflated ego will usually between $150-200 per hour.

There are exceptions to the rule. Celebrity artists charge a lot more. Bang bang studio in NY charges $400 an hour. The owner himself tattooes but at a minimum cost of $1k. They have good artists, but there are artists just as good if not better that charge half the price.
Any good artist without an over inflated ego will charge you between $150-200 dollars per hour. They cater to tattooing celebrities and some of their egos are extremely inflated.

I myself have 10 tattoos and have spent $3500 on them. Most expensive was $1000, cheapest was $50.

My tips to you:

Be as careful in protecting tattoo for two whole weeks after getting it. Do not expose it to any sunlight, every second it is exposed it is damaged. It is essentially an open wound. .


How to make your new tattoo stay looking crisp and prevent fading?

Comes down to three things

Two weeks healing 30%
Tattoo artist skill level 30%
Your skin and health 20%

Some peoples skin naturally hold ink better than others.

The current trend in tattooing is small, realistic and dainty tattoos, or photo realistic paintings that look extremely impressive in photos online. However, they all turn to shit.

Even two of the best artists in the world who do these tattoos, dan grillo and anil gupta admit that these tattoos might last only a year, and serves a main purpose of taking photos to look pretty online.

If you want a tattoo to last, put a black outline around it. Ink spreads over time, and causes the image to distort. Many realistic tattoos that look like paintings have no outline, and turn to shit and lose their shape.

If there's a black line around it, the ink will still spread but the line expands too, retaining its structure .

Many people argue that you can just go for a touch up. You can only do maybe 4-5 touch ups because your skin is torn even further ever time and existing scar tissue can be reopened. If you get it done right the first time and heal it, you'll only need a touch up every 6 years, and then you'll be too old to care

I could go on but if you want a tattoo that lasts, find an artist online (have to admit that Instagram is the best way these days )

look for: photos of healed tattoos and photos of fresh tattoos without stupid filters applied to make it look better.

The number of followers doesn't mean an artist is better. It just means their designs are more popular. Find the right artist for your tattoo, even if you have to travel to get it.

The wolf itself will last if it's healed well and good artist. The red flame detail will be the first to fade but it won't matter too much as it's not the centrepiece of the tattoo

Wear sleeves that aren't tight if you go outside when it's sunny.

At home I expose it to let it breathe as much as possible.

Make sure you have clean bedsheets and don't sleep with a pet. I like to hang a loose bandage around it for the first week because I roll in my sleep

They are the more relatively well known ones

The face is extremely minute and if you want a tattoo that will last, then don't get it in colour if you want t in your forearm. Any sun exposure will start fading, colour ink fades faster too. A tattoo like that would turn to shit in an area exposed to sunlight quickly. You could get touchups but most skin can only be touched up 3-4 times in a lifetime before it becomes too torn and old and won't hold the ink properly anymore. If you've ever seen pictures of an older person getting tattooed, it never turns out looking as good as on a young person.
My recommendation:

Get it full scale as a whole back piece in colour

Or

Have an experienced artist redraw it into an image rather than a painting , that's what my artist did with the Picasso guernica I have, it's not the full painting as the real painting is 7 metres long
