Don't buy Jaeger. Their watches have become so uninspired. They are now just another mass-production factory churning out boring watches in the thousands.

hmmm I'd maybe agree with you if you're planning to buy a simple dress watch like pictured, then I'd go for vacheron or breguet personally. but in terms of a watch with fantastic quality complications, JLC is undoubtedly the best value for money

Value-for-money is not something I consider when looking at watches in that price category.

Breguet and Vacheron are both being put to shame with regards to craftsmanship when compared to Urban Jürgensen. Take Breguet for example, their guilloche dials are made of gold, and then plated in silver, as gold is soft and cheaper to use for that kind of dial. But this results in a lower-quality guilloche pattern as the grooves are not as sharp and clean. If you want excellence, solid silver is the way to go. But Breguet cheat.

Another example is the moon-phase disc. Vacheron just paint theirs, like most others. Urban Jürgensen thermally blue their discs, and the moons are press-fitted into them by hand, and the stars are made of gold dust which is sprinkled in and then melted.

Nobody in the mainstream watch industry does the kind of work that UJ does. Not Patek, not Vacheron, no Breguet, not Jaeger, not anyone.

Perhaps not what YOU look for but the difference between an £8000 watch and a £15000 watch makes a huge difference for most people

If he's looking at JLC, he is most likely wanting to be price-conscious about his purchase, as well he should

Hahaha stop trying to force your purchase on other people. The majority of what makes a watch is what's inside, not how many fairies rubbed their cunts on the dial

hey /fa/, stylish /k/ommando here, I've got some nice luxury watches but im looking for a luxury smart watch with a classic style and im looking in the 800 to 1500 range, though i could go higher.

id like to find everthing i want in one watch, but it doesnt seem that you can get good memory battery life and apps in a package that also includes gps/glonass

im thinking about getting 2 watches to compensate for that, but really want opinions, maybe something that im missing.

watches im considering:

garmin fenix chronos with leather band

samsung gear 3

tag hauer connected

thoughts?

SSC015 and the 017 are pretty cool. Unless you just like the look of the 009. Then I would consider the SNA411, mainly because of the screw in crowns and domed crystal. Unless you dont want to replace the battery every 3 years.

Dude, $25 for a nice looking watch that will work forever, reasonable styling, goes with most clothing styles, and subtle enough that people like it but aren't enamored by it.

I think a few of these $500+ watches look decent, but the value just isn't there for me. I own an expensive watch, and want a Hamilton, but the $25 Casios and $30 Timexes will always see more wear time.

>calling the dial a face

>> No.12204789

So I'm buying a motorcycle, its old and has analog dials. I'd kinda like to strap a watch to the bars so I know what time it is. Ideally I'd like to leave it outside 24/7, be able to withstand the shocks of riding a bike, and be cheap enough so that if someone were to actually steal a watch I won't lose my shit over it.

So far all I'm finding is a Casio F91-1 that would fit this bill. Any alternatives?

If it's the former - they're incredibly fun project bikes because they're very basic, straight forward and you can mod just about every single part of the bike - if that sounds like something you'd like to do you should head over to youtube and watch a couple CB engine rebuild vids, HackaweekTV has a couple great ones.

don't be silly, and don't overthink it. it goes on your wrist, same as a bracelet, bangle, or cuff. do you see any of these with a big round eye sore on them?

listen, it's purely psychological; people's semantic notion of what a clock or a watch should look like. Maybe you're too young but when some of us were little kids, learning to tell time, they put this clock in front of you and it imprints itself and it's hard to get away from that even when you're an adult.

tl;dr:
the round face is a sorely mismatched design for a wrist.

I was into mechanical watches of the mid range for the intricate handiwork and precision needed to make them work.

That ran into a snag when I realized most mid-range mechanical watches use majority machine made swiss movements that are mass produced. These same movements are in many cases the ones in knockoff watches of higher caliber watches. Meaning sometimes the knockoffs are indistinguishable from the real thing as far as mechanics goes.

Even high end brands like Panerai have used standard movements for a long time.

So what are you paying for then? Literally just the brand name and a fancy box.

>>12210290
>Its the same thing with any luxury item; if you buy a Ferrari, you know its going to cost an arm and a dick to buy it.

You are supposed to be able to find the quality differences in the luxury items. A handmade shoe with good leather isn't the same as a mass produced shitty leather one. A Ferrari shouldn't be a Ford car with a Ferrari shell on top of it. Would people still pay for it then?

There has to be a line with luxury items where you realize it's just a scam.

Technology wise the High Frequency Quartz watches coming up now are extremely accurate, far more than a mechanical watch could ever be. They last years on a battery, require minimal service.

The solar power Citizen type watches are ugly as shit but again for technology they've got watches that'll run decades with no battery changes, losing maybe a minute a year.

Not offended, friend. The only advice I've ever been offered is buy new, or take it to a mechanic to check it out. I am a comfortable shade tree mechanic. Nobody ever takes a used car to a mechanic to check the compression of the engine, and rarely do they take it to do a pre purchase inspection. Tires are kicked, and all gizmos are turned on and off. Why its different for motorcycles is just beyond me.

They do when it comes to old engines and 40 years is definitely not young.
The reasons people are more careful with motorcycles is quite straight forward -
1. it's a lot more likely that they've been damaged
2. as a motorcyclist you're a million times more reliant on the performance of your bike than a car driver - it can make the difference between life and death

Good luck.

Alright boys, so which brand of watch do I choose if I live in a small Eastern European country and have the cash to spare?

I think eventually I might be able to shell out 15k$ maximum for a watch.

I want shit that is aesthetic, yet attention grabbing.

Is Rolex too "dadcore" or is it classic?

Should I get an entry level AP?

What about other brands?

Please no Omega, I would never buy a watch with that name. Associates with omega males.

I'm considering Rolex, JLC, Maurice Lacroix, entry level AP.

If I go too flashy, it might be risky and attract unwanted attention, but if I go too classy I will be just another rich beta herb, you feel me.

Tips welcome

Understandable.
I feel the same way about leather bands on watches over 35mm cases they remind be too much of the Chinese "fashion" watches that are all over eBay for under $20.

As far as cost goes, I actually pay very little for watches, since I buy them not working and restore them myself most of the time is an easy fix like a bad battery or capacitor for quartz movements or a cleaning and oiling for mechanical.
Here is what I'm currently servicing.
