Here's a picture from when I first bought them, they're displayed on mannequin heads now. Got both headsets, a bunch of extra hardware, all the manuals, and even the instructional VHS tape which you can see the contents of here.

ambient is an extremely diverse style of music. dismissing something as "just ambient" is silly. there's tons of room for experimentation within the ambient genre. as for the style of "vapor" it would be pretty ignorant to deny the huge influence of the internet and internet culture in that musical movement. even if the music isn't necessarily boundary pushing (i never even said that 2184 was), if you look at post-internet electronic music conceptually and contextually there's lots of exciting innovation going on.

it's essentially electronic music that has been inspired both musically and culturally by the internet and the technological revolution. it's not necessarily just ambient. the obvious thing to note is the abundance of samples of computer sounds, but it goes further than that. sampling in general is a form of postmodernism, and vaporwave takes the idea of sampling to its logical extreme. there's also the use of retro-futuristic audio fonts and on the other hand, actual futuristic synths and sound sculpture that really sound like they could have been taken from the future (see arca and amnesia scanner) there's the strong connection between the music and a visual aesthetic that was born out of the visual nature of internet media. no previous musical movement has ever placed such a high importance on a complimentary visual component (aside from maybe black metal) and thats because of the internet.

it's also important to note that DAWs have made it possible for literally anyone to make music, and websites such as soundcloud and bandcamp have made it possible for literally anyone to distribute their music online. this has a direct influence on the quality and the quantity of post-internet music that is released (for better or for worse is up to you to decide, but there is certainly an influence)

What I meant is, you know what Metallicas 'sound' is even though you dont know what an actual song will sound like before you hear it.

I get there is Neo jazz, Delta Blues and a myriad of subgenres in ANY style of music. My issue is vaporwave is just a renewal of what has come before. It sounds a lot like, well, electronic music, Ambient would be the umbrella term, vaporwave the sub. But vaporwave isnt defined on musical terms, as youve just said, it is the visual.

Age might matter cos if youre young and this sounds new to you then I recommend going back. Listen to stuff like Brian Eno, Avalanches, Aphex Twin, Four Tet, Tangerine Dream, Mike Oldfield, NIN and so much more. All 'future' sounding as is most electronic music.

Regurgitating the past is nothing new.
Vaporwave, like nu-rave (dear god), chillwave, vaportrap, synthwave etcetceteccc doesnt need its own genre, its special place. It should want to be included. In fact, 'vaporwave' artists sound so different from one another they can only be umbrella-ed, I guess. I mean KISS, T-REX, Bowie, Twisted Sister are all glam but they aint the same.

Dont get hung up on the specific artists Ive used, just random examples across random genres.

What do I know, Im closer to 30 than 21 but Ive seen a few fads come and go and it triggers me.
Especially on a fashion board that is ruled by trends and not taste. (not saying the music of 'vaporwave' is bad taste before anyone starts)

I reckon i dress cyberpunk, at least the aesthetic I go for streetwear x punk x the future.

I mostly wear P.A.M, Nike TN's in a black colourway, black/grey baggy trousers that are cropped for the most part, sometimes suit pants (rick, acne, norse), I have an our legacy bomber in black, and then mostly graphic T's. belt chains, metal framed glasses etc

Idk some of these strappy acronym fits can look kind of good, it just makes you look like paramilitary which is lame.

Also paying 1-3k for hardshells, pants, and bags is incredibly try hard. Especially when the whole point of the look is your functionality. When function is priority, form takes a back seat.
