Does wearing a hat everyday fuck your hair up in the long term?

I always had kinda crappy hair, at least since my teens, but i've only just realised my hair got even thinner once I started wearing a hat everyday.

It's been around 4-5 years since then, and i've noticed that when I get out the shower/bath my hair looks fine, but once I started wearing my hat again it gets fucked

Is this just a handmaiden's tale or what?
