are there any good guides to hemming necklines and sleeves?
I can't sew a t shirt neckline to save my life

>> No.12089438

>>12089415

what do you mean?

generally you wouldn't hem a t-shirt neck-line, you'd attach a collar to the raw edge instead.

hemming sleeves: fold the raw edge in twice, press the crease with an iron, pin in place. remove the base platform from your sewing machine so that you can sew in the round, and sew the hem in place. you'll notice that many t-shirts will have either a serge/overlock or two rows of straight stitches in order to secure the hem.

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/patternmaking-for-menswear-injoo-kim/1115887258?ean=9781609019440 i'm currently using this to make my patterns, since my textbooks from school were womenswear focused and relied on pattern blocks and/or the use of forms, which were school property

i also own http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/patternmaking-for-menswear-gareth-kershaw/1115869892?ean=9781780670164 but while using it, i was annoyed with the instructions being imperial but the size charts being metric

i am however constantly referencing the womenswear book as it has construction guides for sewing (https://www.amazon.com/Patternmaking-Made-Easy-3rd-Ed/dp/0964951673/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483226887&sr=8-1&keywords=pattern+making+made+easy+3rd))

i was taught how to grade (re-size) patterns in missy sizing, so i have to either come across a menswear grading book or do trial and error using what i know to grade my patterns

it depends how the stitch is oriented and being used, doesn't it?

if you're using an overlock to join two pieces of fabric at their edges, on the right side you will not see the stitch, as you say, just the seam where the fabrics come together.

if, however, you use an overlock to secure a flat hem, like a fabric folded over onto itself, don't you end up with the two rows of what appear to be straight stitches on the right side?

grab a t-shirt that has hemmed sleeves. look at how the hem is secured, you'll see what looks like two rows of straight stitches on the right side. turn it over, and you'll see that it's an overlock.

The scan will never work, sorry (you will not manage to separate the colours nor make the lines clean due to the denim). You'll have to make a separate screen out of every colour. I made this embroidered patch a while ago and made a DIY guide as well

I highly recommend embroidering a patch first and then stitching it onto a jacket

Sounds like a good alternative, I'll look into it

I made some box logo and placed it on a picture, what better screen printing or embroidery. I'm just looking for what makes it come out with the highest quality, since I'm not trying to sell it.

another alternative was getting the flag printed on a t shirt and just cutting it out and making a patch. I'm sure it would look pretty decent but I always prefer the look of embroidery to something printed.

But a print won't have the same depth/texture as embroidery. If you actually take your time and do it correctly, the results should be on par.

/diy/, the patch gen made me want to embroider a jacket but honestly I'm basically just hoodie wearing trash. Can you embroider straight onto a sleeve and not have it be fucked? Maybe with some backing on the opposite side?

I've never embroidered on a hoodie before but I'm sure it would be fine because the material is fairly thick. There is tear-away stabilizer that is often used for clothes that you can buy. The best thing about embroidery is that you can always remove it if it ends up not looking good

shading is really hard to do with embroidery (if you're doing it by hand) and desu that looks good as a print

So if I want to the print to come out I just gotta make the resolution of the picture is high?

rule of thumb is, always edit and work in 300 ppi, if possible, print out at 300 dpi, but most standard printers max out at 150 dpi

Does anyone know of any good embroidery design software that is either free or has a crack available online? Brother PE Design costs a fortune.
