Practice making a still, non-awkward expression. I think why a lot of people think they look better in mirrors is because you can actively look at yourself and adjust your face.

Basically its all about the focal length of a lens and so when someone is taking a picture of you and luckily they own a DSLR and a few lenses, tell them to use a long one (130-200mm) to photograph you from afar and zoom in.
