Especially starting out, outsource. Computerized embroidery machines are expensive ($300 at the very least), hard to use, and not efficient at all. To compensate for the amount of time you'd put into each patch, you'd have to jack your prices up to a level most people probably wouldn't find worth it.

Also, unless you really luck out, don't expect to make much of a profit. Even the guys in the /k/ threads who devote huge portions of their day to this stuff don't make much money, if at all

That said, it's really fun and it's a good way to get to know a community and trade with people all over the world. I'm having a good time, at least

I got my start by messaging various patch stores on Instagram about their manufacturers and business methods. I'm no expert, but I'd tell you these things:
>have at least ~$250 (at least) you can afford to lose and never make back if things don't work out. That goes towards manufacturing costs, shipping materials, and basic starting promotion
>get on social media right away, Instagram especially. Try to get in contact with promotional patch accounts like @patchgame or @patchcommand
>if you can, always test public opinion on a design before ordering
>order as many patches per batch as you can afford to. The per-patch pricing goes way down the more you order, meaning a greater profit margin for you. 50 patches will run you ~$100 whereas 100 patches will run you ~$120 from the same place
>a standard pricing formula is (manufacturing costs + shipping) / quantity x 4
