Americana/workwear isn't necessarily bad IMO.

The problem arises from the countless fucks that wear this kind of thing, but all their clothes are brand new looking and the get upset when their boots get scuffed and shit. Americana is meant to look worn-in and handed down. Same goes for prep, just on a more waspy level.
