Eat more protein and fat, you'll feel fuller. My thinspo diet is a flexible keto/low carb diet that gives me more continuous energy because my blood sugar is now stable. If you like them as foods, look up zucchini noodles. I like making stir frys with shredded carrots where I previously used rice.

However, this overcomplicates the simple idea of thermodynamics

>> No.11642553

Engineer here. pls just say "Conservation of Energy" or "First Law"

Also, I'm not even an autist normally but using thermodynamics you could also argue that some calories are better than others because there are efficiency differences. For example maybe some calories are more inefficient than others for the body to process and therefore better for losing weight because of how they are metabolized (i.e. veggies because of the fiber). I don't know the efficiencies of various calories but I'm sure it's been studied. And maybe it makes such a little difference in humans that it doesn't matter.

So, yes, the First Law and thermodynamic principals apply to humans no doubt, but, without knowing how efficient we process each energy source put it, it is hard to really say that a calorie is a calorie.

I'm not saying your recommendation is wrong. In my experience, calories are pretty much calories and all one has to do is eat less than their TDEE to predictably lose weight. But I suspect that there are efficiency differences among different types of food processing within the body, making our calorie in calorie out argument technically incorrect, but in practice functional.

Well, the calories would be calories, but what I'm trying to say is that how the body processes those calories almost certainly has differences. Some calories can be used more efficiently than others, and for weight loss we'd want to find the ones that were most inefficient (energy wise)

So the law everyone always states is the first law (conservation of energy), but the second law states that it is impossible to convert thermal energy into useful work with 100% efficiency (entropy is always increasing). So while the calorie may be digested, 1kcal would not be actually used by the body because there would be some losses (loss to heat or whatever), and I suspect different types of foods / calories would be more or less efficient to process by the body. Maybe a high fiber food might take more energy to convert and therefore be more inefficient, and therefore a better choice than pasta, would might be more efficient at being processed. I'm not educated in that field so wouldn't know which.

For practical purposes, the standard eat less than you TDEE works great, but, if get scientific about it just like we can't violate the first law, we also can't violate the second (entropy is increasing).

Also if you are interested in more, this has a good explanation:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC506782/

It seems a lot of people in the health industry that wanted to use the first law, forgot there is a second one.

It would be very interesting to learn which foods were the most inefficient to process, because we could then feel fuller while our body would use less of the potential energy we are putting in. Not an excuse to pig out, but, it might help us choose certain snacks over others (carrots versus broccoli versus cheerios, or something).

According to that manual, yes. Caffeine causes you to release cortisol which increases blood sugar levels. I'm not sure how much you'd have to have for this to be a real issue, but, apparently in their experience it does make a difference.

If no caffeine is unreasonable to you, you can just limit it to a cup in the morning. It has helped my sleep a lot to limit the time-span I drink caffeine and the amount. I used to stop caffeine at noon, but, I found that actually wasn't soon enough and that big window caused me to drink too much.

You need to make yourself aware of the calorie content of things. Like, if you're craving ice cream in the afternoon, remind yourself that that means you'll have a lot less calories left for the rest of the day and you'll maybe be hungry at your bedtime. Just consider whether something is really worth all of the calories you'll lose to it. Also, maybe try restricting less so you can actually keep your diet up. I am exploring just how much emaciation I can stand until I pass out, both for the sake of vanity and to augment my endurance, as I would like to become a semi-pro cyclist. Also, it has been decidedly easy to do; when you are losing this much water on a daily basis, the exercise distracts the body from hunger pangs offset by copious amounts of water, which is as filling as any meal could be- consider it as a free lunch.

Nice! We'll see, I keep saying "this is my last goal" but then once I reach it I decide to lose more. I'm going really slow now and it doesn't even feel like I'm dieting, basically just eating 250 calories below my TDEE which is easy - but then three months later I've lost 6 pounds which really adds up.

It's an appetite suppressant, it doesn't actually make you skinny. So, you can just choose to eat less. Unless you're a fatty, you'll adjust quite quickly and won't feel hungry as often after just a few days of fewer/smaller meals.

Coffee and tea are other appetite suppressant alternatives. Less cancer, and cheaper.

I use Lose It which only gives you "bonus calories" once you've walked ~5000 steps. Like, if you walk 10k, it only calculates 5k of those. I log my running though and I think the numbers make sense. The treadmill usually says I burned <300 calories which sounds like a bit much to me but I think Lose It takes my height and weight into account and give me a little less than 200 calories which feels more accurate.

Besides what's already been recommended, I've found the best thing for me is not to restrict anything too much. Eat a lot of nutritious stuff and focus on things that are filling and keep you satiated (proteins and healthy fats and veggies), but don't totally cut stuff out of your diet. Portion control will take a while and I'd recommend staying away from foods you aren't very good at portioning well for a little while unless you're really craving them, but the trick is to not let yourself feel deprived. Hunger is normal on a diet but the really tough hunger comes when you feel you try to go cold turkey on stuff you enjoy.

>> No.11647271

>>11647206
Well, I drink a lot of Lyons with milk (which is about ~5kcal/mug) in the morning, that usually keeps me full. Then around lunchtime I have breakfast (I'd say lunch but it's usually a sandwich, a slice of spinach pie etc), and then I keep myself busy until maybe 6pm when I have a proper meal. After that I have dessert and eat nothing until midnight because I can't go to bed on an empty stomach. Also I try to do a poo every day because I usually feel a bit sick after that and can't eat.

I do situps and walk my dog every day and swim at the weekends. I try to pick healthy stuff but restricting myself has only ever backfired hard so I still eat ice cream, jam and I won't lie the occasional spicebag every once in a while. Coffee gives me the jitters but I'll have starbies once in a blue moon and I'm a teetotaller so alcohol's out of the question.

Obviously my skeletal ways won't work for everyone, it's best if you try different things and see what works for you.

Some snacks I like:
>Baby food (puréed fruit), ~50kcal/125g jar >soup (high in sodium)
>tea with 15ml skimmed milk, ~5kcal/mug
>edamame
