the best colors to pair with burgundy are Navy, grey, and tan.
Using white shoes with those pants could also make it work nicer
If you are ever having trouble putting fits together what I used to do is go to fashion shop sites (my usuals: Frank&oak, topman, asos, revolve)
then search for example: 'burgundy shirt' typically they will have a model wearing a full fit. These are pieced together by actually payed stylist.
but don't just copy the look first try to make sense as to why these pieces work together.

alright since you didn't get a serious response:
take those red pants and burn them. Red pants are for nerds. Nobody will ever look good in red pants. There's really no need for an undershirt when the thing you're layering on top is so thin. Also boat shoes arent that cool here. You look like you'd be pretty decently dressed on r/mfa, but that kind of fit will get laughed at here. Swap the pants for like khaki or black or something and you'd look p decent.

Good news, your date was more than likely a pleb, and though you looked dapper anyway.

>>11596289
the sleeves are too long. otherwise it looks fine. Maybe cuff the ends?

>my own question
Are there any solid rules for the materials of shirts for layering? I notice that wearing like an oxford shirt under a sweater can be a little restrictive, so would it be better to wear a thinner shirt (broadcloth, linen, etc.?) instead so I don't have to feel like I'm wearing a cocoon in order to look fresh af?

On the top I'd go for either a white tee, a light grey sweatshirt, or maybe a white oxford shirt; you could wear the sweatshirt on top of the Oxford if you like.

A clean, non distressed light wash denim jacket on top would be nice too.

keep lurking, buy clothes slowly. You don't want to blow your wad too quick. Even at some point within the next couple years if you think you know what you're doing you don't. If you blow a ton of money all at once you'll end up realizing you wasted money on at least some of the pieces. Buy things at a slow pace and you won't waste all your money on beginner traps, only some of it. Learning style is a process. I'd say you've got a decent fit on everything you're wearing so next look at color theory and how to match stuff. That shirt is pretty terrible with nearly everything. Most things that are loud or very saturated will be hard to match / look out of place. Your shirt is a very saturated, almost neon, cyan. Look up the definition of saturated in terms of color theory. You'll want to mostly play it safe and stick with more neutral navy, white, black, grey, maroon, etc. until you're more experienced.

only thing you could get away with in college is a beanie or maybe a decent cap, but neither really work without something peeking out from under them. you were p fucked anyway though, that undercut was irredeemable
also you may want to chill on bombers/milsurp boots/such, especially if you're white (can't really tell if you aren't or if that's lighting) and are going somewhere liberal. getting pegged as a skinhead in college probably isn't the best
