Didn't see one so I figured I'd start.

I'm really excited to see this ACRNM x Futura piece. Graffiti is what got me into techwear so I'm really digging what these guys are doing here. The smeared paint pattern is pretty cool and I dig the olive-green bottom/black upper colorway on the new Presto's too.

i'm not much of a techwear guy but I'm getting so sick of the nostalgic/retro-fetishism in fashion and really just wish we could move onwards and upwards, something which this niche might help accomplish.

love the futuristic silhouettes and materials, but I don't think "future" has to mean dark or muted colors. any good examples of bright colors in techwear?

Isn't this stuff a little silly? Houdini is much more of a windshell than doe thing that'll keep out a lot of rain. If you're looking for a windshell, I strongly recommend either the Black Diamond Alpine Start or Arc'Teryx Squamish. The Houdini is okay, but they're just *better* for ~$150 MSRP and often way less on clearance. Material, construction, patterning, aesthetics. Between the two, if you're buying a menswear-patterned version, get the Alpine Start: the fabric is slightly better. If you're buying a womenswear-patterned version, get the Arc'teryx: the BD does this ass stupid thing where it moves the single pocket to the inside on the ww-p version.
If you're looking for something fully waterproof, again, if you can stretch a little get the Marmot Minimalist. Extremely durable for its weight, great patterning and feature set. If you can't, get the Marmot Precip, which is the best $100 rain jacket but like all of them less breathable, durable, and technically designed.

Thank you so much for this post! What an overwhelmingly helpful response. I think I've decided on the Marmot Precip. Here's why:

I'm comfortable shelling out(no pun intended) $100-175 for this piece, but the price on the Precip seems unmatched for the quality.

While looking at a jacket testing/review site, they had the Precip rated equally in water resistance with two Gore-Tex jackets(Marmot Minimalist and Outdoor Research Foray).

It was the highest-rated in comfort and mobility among 15 jackets tested, which was my most important criteria outside of water resistance.

The hood was probably my third most important criteria, as I've had many hoods that were uncomfortable on my head. The Precip doesn't seem to have that problem. In fact, the reviewer raved about the hood's functions and comfort.

Honestly, it's a little disappointing that all of these recent techwear threads always end up devolving into just another goof ninja thread. I'd really like to see more subtle tech inspo. Black clothing is actually cooler if worn loose. White reflects heat more also back towards your own body which heats the layer of air between you and the clothing. In contrast, black draws the heat away from your body. Just look at traditional desert nomad clothing usually in blue but can also be found in black. Pic related is traditional tuareg clothing.

There is literally no difference cooling wise from one color to another.
The reason they dress like this is because many layers of loose fabric dispels the heat that goes in and retains the cooling of the sweat for more time; they use many layers for that.

A little more civilian today. Pants are windproof + water absorbent from Uniqlo a few years ago. Water seems to go away in around 20 minutes after getting drenched.

Pretty uncomfortable in the crotch area which is weirdly small and the lining pulls on leg hair if I don't wear long socks.

Yeah, more air surrounding the bodyeqauls more insulation from the heat outside, increased evaporation of sweat (more cooling) and increased UV protection. However, black does offer more protection than white.

Hello actual /tech/ people,
I'm starting to build a practical wool-based and milsurp wardrobe. Bought merino wool t-shirts, boxers and socks from Varusteleka as well as their blanket shirts made from old military blankets. Can you rec me some good brands or online shops (preferably European as shipping from America is costly) where I can find some good woolen pants? Merino preferred, all non-pants recs I'm also very grateful for.

Btw, I love you, this is usually the best general on this board.

You will seldom find merino pants. This is because the benefits (sweat wicking etc) aren't worth applying to legs where you don't sweat as much. Also because lighter wool will deteriorate much much faster than thicker wool (which doesn't exactly feel the greatest to wear). Notice how merino wool is mainly used for base/undergarment layers?

Honestly there don't seem to be a lot of options. New balance minimums look good, there is always Birkenstock and you might be able to find some non-ugly models.

Some models of adidas/ Nike / y-3 are ok such as NIke free. But they still don't have zero drop and often the toe box is too small.

I had a pair of OTZ boots but it was too small on me so I gave it away.

Any niche brands/pieces for poors with acceptable quality?

Also, certain tacticool brands can have pieces that can fit neatly into techwear so you shouldn't discard them automatically

(see Condor and their jacket which is respectable for its price and has no obnoxious pockets or branding)

Also, certain sub brands of Nike (Gyaksou ACG) can have lucky cheap finds

Ok the issue with cheap 'tech' wear is that there's too many compromises to be made when trying to be cheap - you really get what you pay for - at least for winter clothing.

Sure you could do without the YKK waterproof zippers and maybe even taped seams, but in a field where even the cheapest Gore-Tex membrane is considered ahead of everyone else and where most people usually intend to get years out of their weather resistant (winter) clothing, the average niche business will be simply dismissed and given bad ratings.

However, active wear and outdoors brands quite frequently have clearance sales (see: Patagonia, Arc'teryx, Kathmandu, Nike, Adidas etc.) and it's probably the best bang for your buck whether it be synthetic tees or a nice windbreaker. I've also heard good things about the REI co-op if you're in the U.S, however i'm in Australia and don't have any experience with them.

I wouldn't really classify any shoes as specifically tech, it's easy to work in a pair of boots for a winter fit and sneakers for summer.

I know this isn't the greatest fit, but I got this jacket from my dad. It worked well in very heavy downpour but due to how old it is, wasn't exactly breathable - however at least it was lined with fleece and gave me some insulation. In my experience, if you go to any thrift shop and you're bound to see gear like this (pants as well) because a lot of people have to use it for work-wear or can't keep up the active lifestyle.

Just don't get a piss poor hard shell/raincoat (especially MilSurp) because they will get you extra clammy and you will overheat in the rain. MilSurp bags aren't exactly comfortable either because they're built for lasting in a warzone rather than civilian use.
