you said that 'physics is wannabe pure mathematics'. You support this statement by saying that 'physicists theorize a bunch of dumb shit, and justify it with applied maths'. You then say 'Pure mathematicians actually come up with interesting theories'. Another statement. So the reason why physics is 'wannabe pure mathematics' is because alone it just 'theorizes dumb shit', and ends up using maths to 'justify it'. Hence physics wants to be (wannabe) maths. There's your argument. I've had to make do with your style of wording but there is an argument in there. Also my question involving 'the two' was perfectly reasonable. If you followed this chat like a conversation you should hopefully retain your previous statements.

Dude, this isn't the late 90's where software devs sit in grey cubicles and wear pocket squares. You could work from home or onsite, either way you can wear whatever the fuck you want 90% of the time. You can set your own schedule and do whatever the fuck you want. You can hatch a shitty startup and hang out with other 20-somethings and get wasted and talk about raw denim at open-bar mixers (there are a ton of them) or uber-hipster coworking spaces.

Also the nerd stereotype isn't really a thing anymore. Software is so alien to most people that you could be a fucking WordPress developer and people would be like "wow you're so smart, that stuff just seems so hard". that's interesting, I will have to think about that. When he was describing intuition in physics though, just kind of feeling your way to the answer, I felt that was quite true of a lot of mathematics too. the logic comes at the end as a mere "formality"

more to the point of the video, it seems as though your stance is like feynmans in that the physicist is always thinking back to something in the real world rather than theorizing for its own sake. this is a meaningful difference between physics and math. do you think it still holds up at the level of particle or quantum physics where nobody really knows what the real thing in the world is?

I tend to think of theoretical stuff like particle/quantum as "physics" and stuff like mechanics as just applied math. I'm wrong, I know, but it may inform you of my stances.

I like my position teaching math. Teaching is really a lazy profession while commanding a decent amount of respect at the university level, so it's fa in that regard. It's research that's difficult and if you land the right job you can fake it or not do any.

that was tongue in cheek, obviously, but my point was that most proofs are not conceived of with much logical rigor. that is done once you have the intuition, which is gained as feynman describes physicists gaining theirs.

did I say theoretical physics is just applied math? i didn't mean to. my original claim was that i don't like what they theorize about and then feynman comes along and says all physics has some grounding in the real world. I wanted another physicists opinion on whether this was true in practice.

You need to be okay with spending ages researching something only to lose money. Not all ideas make you money and you will make mistakes.
You're very likely to make mistakes when you start off - it's a pretty big test of self confidence. Don't expect to make money when you trade.
For the first year or two you shouldn't expect to make money, you are there to learn. It's still pretty important for you to learn fast though, unless you have all the money in the world.
You also need a fair bit of patience because it could take ages before you see any money.
If you're a student you'll find it pretty hard to balance work, social life, and trading, especially at the start.
I'd recommend it if you were more interested in trading rather than the earning money bit.

This is all a great theory except software developers are complete fucking dorks who have zero fashion sense, do not know how to interact with normals, and have a highly inflated sense of their own intelligence (altho I guess models and "fashion" people are no different there). Just because you have money to buy clothes that someone on the Internet told you are cool, doesn't mean you are cool.

Proof: the entire city of San Francisco, aside from the homeless and the working class, who are the only people with any sense of actual style or culture.

And before you accuse me of being poor or hating, I worked in software and cashed out so I could avoid all of those people for the rest of my life

Well golly, thanks fellas. I think you're underestimating how smelly the work is. I tried to dress decently when I first started, but it all goes under a heavy denim apron anyway so now it's a pair of hiking boots, some 17oz raws I bought years ago and a white tee, sometimes a synthetic buttonup for hikers, since the smell of fermented corn and barley doesn't cling to it.

It's not a huge distillery, we have just enough production to supply the city. I'm hoping we get big enough to get bought out so I can take my share and open my own distillery since bourbon is boring.

I'm curious. How many of you got to where you are on your own? I mean, did most of you have parents and such who helped push you when you were younger? Did they work in a field and make you work in a similar field? Did they help pay for your college or whatever? Are they still helping you?

Also, did anyone have family members or friends that pretty much got you a guaranteed job without you doing much?

Do you enjoy your job?

A few weeks ago when coaching a bunch of HS kids in debating I realised I actually fucking love teaching. Not sure if I'm being overly romantic about the field atm, I'd like to know what teaching is like from a fellow /fa/ggot's perspective.

Studied Physics with Astrophysics but I dropped out part way cuz of people like the anons above and it got very boring and I was depressed. I'm now a full time musician. Play in several bands, from indie/pop/rock to pay the bills, and black metal/math/post-whatever for me, make some Electronic stuff on the side too. I enjoy myself a lot more now and kinda dread what my life would have been like had I stayed with physics. I guess it's pretty effay

Industrial Designer

Pros
>Get to do something I love
>Crosses over with fashion, art, and science
>Get to go to cool product design conventions and sometimes get to show stuff I've worked on
>It's a broad field so I could work in more artistic design conceptualization or more engineering based production stuff
>Good number of options as far as corporate vs consultancy work

Cons
>High stress, deadline heavy especially if you work in consultancy
>Have to live with the fact that I am contributing to the production of what is basically guaranteed to become garbage within 10 years, especially if it's electronics based
>Have to live knowing the designs I poured so much passion into will inevitably be discarded and sit in a dump until long after I die
>Have to live knowing that ideas that could positively impact a lot of people will be discarded in the early phases of design because the company you're working for wants something else
>A lot of pretentious douchbags in the field on the more "artsy architect" side of the spectrum

Some of the cons get me down, but I love ID so much I'm not too worried about it.

can't recommend psychodynamic theory though, it's pretty dead already and will most definitely be in the future (unless everyday practice is very different where you are, I actually have no idea how things are outside of my part of Europe), not to mention how relatively unscientific it is
