I think one of the main reasons an outfit is considered avant garde is not just the outfit itself, but also who is wearing it. I think, at the end of the day, creativity and confidence create an avant garde outfit. Anything outlandish can, more or less, be pulled off if the wearer carries themselves with confidence. That's just my opinion.

now the line between avant garde and cosplay is really close but you can kinda just feel it(it depends on the person too desu some can actually pull some of the stuff off but most teenie boppers look like fuccbois when doing so)

Also, I think attention to detail is very important. People who have the creativity and confidence to pull something off will also have a good eye for detail.

Acting class is probably helpful for developing confidence and understanding how you behave in different circumstances / developing an observing ego

confidence doesn't allow you to dress avant-garde but knowledge does. knowing current clothing trends and norms, how clothes are constructed, the relation of clothes to your body, and how to come up with interesting ideas that can be translated to clothing are just some requirements to dress avant-garde. dorks who cosplay can have all the confidence in the world and they still dress like shit.
