Hey /fa/ I used to post here a long time ago under the name "User." I am graduating from fashion school in antwerp this year.

I doubt anyone here now remembers me, but id be happy to answer questions regarding fashion school/pattern making school and learning to stitch and make clothing if anyone here is interested.

hmm i wish i knew to be less afraid of material and less scared to fuck up. you learn quicker by just going for it and experimenting with a seam, or a finishing technique or a strange dart, even if your idea fucks up, at least you have a starting point to develop your idea from. and 99% of the time its pretty easy to fix what you fuck up on a garment during construction.

It depends on what type of school youre interested in i think, but from what i can observe, the main thing that gets people into school is having a interesting perspective on fashion, and being interesting creatively.

I think most schools judge the quality of a student based more on what they see potential wise in a person. More often then not, that means having a very strong and distinctive personality, which generally turns into strong, distinctive work.

i work at a shop that sells leather, in the back of the shop they have a work space with a skiving machine, different adler leather machines (walking foot, post machine etc)

I work there for like 40 euros per week to use the space.

takes 1.5 days for a jacket, 2.5 to 3 for a coat or heavier piece

are you looking for lists of factories? or to read more about how clothing is manufactured? most resources on clothing manufacture are very regional, for example there is a small trade newspaper in los angeles with tons of ads for different companies that do job lots for denim/leather/knit/accessories etc. but its very specific to one area.

what ive found an amazing resource, for writing papers, doing person research etc. is actually just doing searches through google scholar. There is a huge amount out there if you want to do heavy, in depth research with credible sourcing and good citations.

design, previously studied/worked as a patternmaker/technical designer.

The direction of fashion in general is not particularly interesting to me. No one young takes the time to understand the fundamental elements of constructing garments. Without a foundational knowledge of stitching and construction, you have nothing to build from. thats the price of things being so fast. the current things that most people produce are just bad mimics of other things or collections that are pure masturbation.

I dont claim to be any better than anyone else, but i definitely think it will take 30 years+ of making clothing on a professional level for me to be able to make pieces that i actually consider impressive.

aslo, the cost of school depends on what materials youre using, if you do a coat in tons of different colors of mink, and have a furrier stitch it for you itll cost 6k alone. I know people who have done this. You can do a collection with only grey cotton and it will cost less than 800 for everything. its all depending on what you use, and if you outsource anything.

There is a lot of jerking off in the fashion industry. I doubt very much that most contemporary, respected designers were writing papers on 19th century wool-dying processes though. Surely there's some benefit to studying old techniques, however, most people these days, when they are successful, arrive at it really organically. Not that most of them didn't pay their dues at Parson's. But I think you're missing the point.

Maybe i am, any the wool dying thing was a random example. The thing is with fashion though, the fundamental elements of making garments fit on the body are what allow you to innovate with shape and volume in a realistic way.

For sure, i think youre right that most people arrive at their success organically, but when I look at the young people who are starting producing clothing now, am I impressed by their creativity and brilliant clothing? No. All the people who make impressive clothing are old and from a different generation.

Unfortunately live in an area where there are no classes beyond going to university or school, and I'm okay with taking another year and a half or two to study on basic garment construction. I've been pushing myself to make 1-2 garments a week which so far has been good, but is there any recommendations on any self-help or taught books, courses or anything you recommend focusing on?

tl;dr
1) can't go to any classes for basic garment construction
2) do a lot of self teaching myself
3) plan on applying to school after 1.5 - 2 years of self teaching.
3) anything to recommend for self teaching people?

Again, its worth your time and money to take a class, even if its at a university or whatever. Stitching is very tactile you cant learn from just books/internet. i tried it as well, but if you value your time, get a good teacher.

if you want a book recommendation, try this. its a series of books by the same author, on coats and shirts etc. this book is actually amazing because it has patterns, nice cuts, and heavily detailed images of the construction process of the pieces. its in japanese but it doesnt matter because the images explain everything.

Someone made a thread about you and was dumping pics ect and mentioned you were going to school in Antwerp. I am actually wanting to study fashion design with an emphasis on sustainability. How feasable is it to go to school and actively avoid working with any animal products. I am morally against wools/silks/leather ect and I want that to reflect in my work so I dont want to be in a course that will make me work with such materials. I am incredibly interested in discussing this in detail so if you are interested I would really like to email you or contact you. Thanks man.

my roommate did an award winning collection that was sponsored based on the fact that all materials were sustainably sourced. Have you heard of Bruno Pieters? He uses wools, but the concept of the brand is very interesting.

It is for sure possible to focus on sustainability, but its important for it not to effect the aesthetic, otherwise it is easily lumped into eco/vegan bullshit. its difficult because fashion inherently creates so much waste, but its definitely feasible.

I doubt youll find a good program that only focuses on fashion sustainability, more likely to find a very free school that allows you to make whatever kind of collections you want, then its really up to you.

feel free to email me if you want to discuss further, its posted above.

What would you recommend to someone who's more interested in patterns and graphics on clothing rather than making the actual garment. At the moment I'm steering towards that direction and I'll make DIY shirts with my own graphics in the summer. I know it's more in the graphic design department but I just wonder if I should look into textile printing schools. I already have two years of art school behind me and I'm experienced with different image softwares so making pictures wouldn't be a new thing for me. I really want to pursue this. there are very good textile design schools in holland/sweden/uk

since you already have the technical knowledge to develop your prints digitally, find a school with really good facilities that will allow you to experiment with screen printing/digital printing on different textiles/creating your own jacquards and knitwear. Also might be good to find a program that also gives you access to good research as well which is a huge part of printed textile development. But i think for you, its mainly about the equipment they provide to students. My friend studies in ljubljana and they can make as many meters of fabric as they want on a digital jacquard machine, which is normally insanely expensive, so really check what type of things you can work with.

Look for screen printing facilities in your area, research and find the fabrics you want to use, develop your prints, and experiment with getting the effect you want on the desired material. its a huge time investment, so if youre not interested in learning the printing process, you can pay someone to do a run of a certain number of pieces, youll just send them the pdf of your print and theyll do tests and show you, make changes and print it on whatever you want.

Depends on what it is youre interested in doing. if you want to alter your own pieces, get a solid sewing machine, preferably an older all metal one, and a nice iron.

If you want to make graphics on t shirts and hoodies then get screen printing gear or find a place in your city that has professional equipment.

the tools you should buy depends on what it is you want to do with your clothes.

>>11179246

well to get in contact with designers is easy, just send them a message on their facebook or instagram. Finding factories is generally not such a good idea online, i would only produce something with a factory if i knew someone who knew the owner, or if i personally knew someone who worked with the factory before. Im producing shoes in moscow, and im only doing it there because i have a connection from a friend.

basically you need to have a solid network of contacts, you get this by studying in a city with a good scene, or working in a city with a good scene, thats up to you.

any thoughts on those computerized sewing machine/embroidery machines for ~$300?

partner and I were thinking about getting one to sell patches. would it be any good to learn to sew on? I'm looking to hem pants and maybe alter shirts to start, but you suggest an old all metal model. why's that?

>> No.11179586

>>11179478

i suggest on older metal one, because normally home sewing machines that are new and computerized basically just have shitloads of useless features for ladies to quilt. normally when you make clothes, you only need a straight stitch, its really unnecessary to have all the other things, because chances are it will just be mediocre at everything. If you want to make patches which are nice, i would instead design the patches and work at a place that embroiders them on higher quality industrial embroidery machines, the result will be much better and youll spend less money overall.

User....man I haven't seen that nickname here for a loooooong time now, always wondered why you left. Hope you're doing great pal. Oh, and what do you think of Vetements ? Overpriced shit of the day or really something significant?

thanks, just was a period where i didnt spend much time online..

vetements i appreciate the idea behind the brand, i really respect the concept of making interesting singular pieces that are extreme in a sense and not tied to a specific type of trend. but i think its also really a pity that they are known for their shittier pieces, the printed/graphical ironic stuff. its kind of a shame because dhl shirts are essentially the main thing the brand is associated with. unfortunately i think the brand is too heavily derivative to ever have real significance. i like demna though, he seems like a cool guy, fun to work with.

Hey man thanks for this great thread ,it's a refreshing break from the constant stream of shitposting this board has become. I got accepted into both The New School and NYU with a full scholarship. Can you or anyone weigh in on where I should go if I want to go into fashion design?

>> No.11179698

>>11179673

i didnt know that nyu had a fashion program, but regardless, the choice of school depends on what kind of fashion you are interested in doing. i chose my school because of its extreme focus on creativity, but i realize its not the best school for everyone. but the question that you have to know the answer to is, what kind of clothes do you want to do? because that will make the decision of what school to attend easier.

Holy shit I'm retarded, I read Aachen not Antwerp. Sorry OP, what I meant is that my GF is finishing Fashion Design in Hamburg and she is a bit nervous because she doesn't really know what to do next. Should she try to find a job at some firm or maybe continue with a Masters. She has already experience having done a couple of internships at big firms in NY. What do you think? And also congratz and shieeeeet

if she can get into a small company/start up company as a design assistant, it'd be perfect
the smaller the company, the more involved and the more roles she will be playing

what would she study for the masters?

being in LA, my experience has been that design degrees are tough to proceed with in the field unless you have experience in pattern making, but that may very well be due to the market down here being more production focused

>well what does she want to do?

I guess that is the problem she doesn't really know. I think she wants to work for a big firm and learn all the shit she needs, I think that designing is her passion. The only thing though is that I don't really want her to move out cause we live together I could bear her living in Berlin cause its close or even Copenhagen but somewhere in France would be out of the question for me, I fucking hate France and french people. Which cities in Europe would you recommend?

copenhagens cool henrik vibskov etc, milans good, stockholm also can be, i know a lot of people there..london obviously but its pricey. antwerp if she wants to work at raf/walter/haider/etc

but basically she needs to clearly know what she wants to do first. then its easy to decide where to go and what to do.
