Blazers and dress shirts were just clothes at that time. Denim and t-shirts became popular among greasers of the late 1950s and early 1960s because they were expendable and allowed them to move freely while working on their beater cars - the entire concept of "cool" grew out of this subculture of rebellion, of flaunting the blazers and dress shirts that their fathers wore. It wasn't until the 1970s that jeans and t-shirts became acceptable to wear out in public (people did it anyway though). Always kept tucked in, though. Flannel was strictly considered a winter/cold weather shirt and stayed that way until the 80s.

A couple more thoughts:
- What we think of as casual clothes today are mostly descended from the workwear of the 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s, the 50s idea of casual clothes was fairly different, and stuff like ties could be worn casually
- The 50s were when the idea of having specific clothes for leisure started to come around due to the greater average prosperity and more leisure time available. This is when marketing took off, and it was a perfect way to sell people things they didn't need to survive
- The 80s were when air conditioning became pretty ubiquitous so people started to forget how to dress seasonally
