Depends on your price-range. There's nothing inherently wrong with any of the boots that Reddit endorses, just don't dress like Reddit. Here are some brands of varying prices.

Red Wing
Wolverine
Oak Street Bootmakers
Jack Erwin
Viberg

Whats a good routine maintenance to keep boots in top shape?
I know you should brush off dust after wearing them and store them with shoe trees, but what about creams and polishes?
When I bought my first pair of guidis I picked up a tin of saphir renovateur, but haven't used it yet since the leather still feels as nice and oily as day one.

conditioning need only happen every few months, perhaps more/less frequently depending on the frequency of wear and weather conditions. If your leather still feels like that then it probably doesn't need conditioning.

Conditioning basically consists of cleaning dirt/dust off the surface then rubbing the conditioner in like a lotion.

>>11051023
at the lowest price points I'd go,

for workwear/outdoor stuff, ll bean, katahdin, chippewa

otherwise, meermin, story et fall

these will run you $200-$300. Go below that price point and there really isn't anything worth your money, imo.

A question for any anon that owns several pairs of Alden boots/shoes:

How's the QC been?

I own a couple of pairs (all with varying issues) and was looking at a pair of chromexecel indy boots in store yesterday.

Fuck they were horrible. The leather was so thin and already crinkling without wear. Think paperthing grandma skin. I've seen wolverine 1k's with better cxl.

The stitching on the soles on one pair was also stitched dangerously close to the edge.

I was seriously wondering wtf. 550+ for these?
Is alden taking crazy pills or something?

On my own pairs, I've had speed hooks around the wrong way, or slanted, poor cxl clicking, poor vamp stitching and more. These were all firsts, mind you.

I have cxl vibergs that are so different that you'd never believe that they're the same leather as the Indy's (both natty Cxl). And red wing? At least they manage to put all their fucking speedhooks on right lmao.

I only look at alden now because of #8 shell, that and the trubalance last really is so comfy for me.

As much as I hate to admit it, my indy boots (retarded looking as they are) are my comfiest boots. Beating the vibergs, red wings, rmw's and trickers. But they sure as hell don't look or feel like they'll last anywhere near as long.

But I just have to wonder: am I taking crazy pills or something?

Whenever I pick up a pair of aldens and give them a once over I see NONE of the same issues I find there with comparably priced alternatives from their competitors.
None.
And they're even worse than cheaper competitors like Red wing.

I don't get it.

But is it just me?
I mean, I've come to compromise and realize that if I want anything alden, this flagrant lack of QC is price of entry. Sometimes it's bad, sometimes not.

I hear of some people buying thier 2nds. Shit I can't even begin to imagine what they're like after experience with their so-called "1st's".

Anyone notice the same lack of quality and care in craftsmanship?

Sorry, that's a clunky phrasing.

I mean that I look at other makers and see none of the same issues I've noticed with aldens of a comparable price point.

The build quality of the boots Im talking about went from being decent quality, made to be a work or uniform boot. To a fashion oriented build quality. They dont last as long. When people go from saying they lasted a few years, and then recent purchasers saying they last only a few months?
Danners seem to be doing ok still, but they dont make the kind of boot I want. But bates, corcoran, etc. Seem to be cutting production quality.
