Yes, that's the thing. Their mentality might be the same, but people simply still assume men are generally less into fashion than women. Girls are supposedly obsessed with their appearance. So when a girl gets asked "why" she's wearing something, she's more likely going to 'defend' her choice by saying it's comfy or something like that, because apperantly her 'fashion statement' hasn't been received/perceived positively. People are more likely to accept that a guy wears something he genuinely likes, without caring too much about fashion, regardless of how trendy his clothes are.
