Hey /fa/.
I wanted to see if you guys could help me out with something, I'm designing a video game (native to /agdg/) and I'm currently working on the three main characters.
I started lurking /fa/ so I could get an idea of what the current trends were and came up with two original characters. I still have to add a lot more stuff to make them less generic but could you guys point me in the right direction? Should I rework any of the outfits? Also I still haven't sketched the third character so if you have any ideas please let me know.

I lack originality when it comes to designing my own original characters, so I'd really appreciate the help and critique.

I'm really glad you like her! She's the first that came to mind when I was brainstorming.
And yeah, I was told the other one looked generic and bland. She's supposed to be the more rational one in the group, calm and somewhat elegant (in personality) and since she's the tallest and strongest of the three she's also very protective of her friends.

poncho girl is fresh but I'm not a huge fan of her billowy pants, I think the drapey factor in the fit is already covered by the poncho. Could I see a sketch of her in more skin tight pants?as for secretary girl, she needs something else to really make her design pop. great linework on these btw!

honestly disagree with the suggestion of skinny pants. the wide ones look amazing (google sarah-linh tran, the style of the left girl in your OP picture looks really similar to how tran wears wide pants and boots together). much more fashion forward imo and if this videogame is going to be released a year+ from now, i'd go with the wide pants. it will feel fresher since womenswear, broadly speaking, is moving away from skinny pants on the runways, and i expect that to trickle down into everyday wear as well

for the right girl i really think what's holding the character design back is that there's no detailing on the sweater or skirt or shoes that really feels unusual and distinguishes her a bit. some ribbing on the sweater maybe?

i actually think it would be awesome if you incorporated some jewelry into the character design as well for the tall girl with the braid. i'll dump some pictures

not sure, i wonder if in-between pants would compromise the character design. imo video game character designs should always have a bit of exaggeration, especially if these are the main characters. girl has long hair? make it extra-long, down to her waist. girl has short hair? pixie cut, don't mess around with anything half-assed.

that said i did see an inspo pic on /fa/ recently that had slightly slimmer pants and there was a bit of skin showing between the pants and the ankle, which is just slightly different than the OP's image

After seeing the second version and seeing what other anons have to say, I'm actually liking the idea of a compromise. Maybe try a bit billowy at the top while cinched at the bottom? Jogger-esque? I'm still willing to be convinced about full drapey pants, there's just something about the first version I'm not super into.

Since the third character is the /main/ main character I want her to be strong in a feminine way, also a bit reserved since she's not from where the other two are from, and taking that into account I want her outfit to add a bit of contrast to the toned down colors of the other two.
I'm really liking the first picture you posted.

You should check out the Lemaire mainline as well. It's very in line with what you've designed for your characters so far.

Also check out Issey Miyake's Pleats Please line. I think you would have a lot of fun rendering the movement of the clothes such as the Madam T as well as the drop-crotch pants.
