I'm starting a job that requires me to wear suits all the time. I never had a suit before, should I just go out and buy a cheap one for the time being then get a tailor made one when I have enough money or should I just buy an expensive one from a store?

Also I'm not sure if I'll look good with a suit or not, I feel like my shoulders aren't broad enough.

shit, I'm fucking fucked. What's your experiences with suits?

>> No.10401063

If you have the money, get a half decent suit (nothing too expensive though). Either navy or grey - both more versatile than black. Whatever you do, make sure it fits properly. Focus on the shoulders, because they're the hardest to tailor.

If you're worried about looking good or not, don't worry. As long as it fits properly it will look good. Do some pushups or start lifting if you're concerned about your shoulders.

Also, where are you? Posting shitty infographics to help you out

Backing up this anon. Most of what he said is on point, but where you're located is important. I can't speak with authority out of the US, but the quality of your suit will mean much more in the northeast and certain parts of the west coast than the South, for example.

I'm not joking when I say this go to hm if you're skinny and try on their suits they are stupidly inexpensive the quality is not bad like everyone here will tell you, they're fantastic for the price just take them to a tailor to get hemmed and the sleeves if you need it. Nobody gets a fucking tailor made suit it's a waste of fucking money and autistic, just get some hm suits in different colors because you obviously aren't rich so don't try and pretend you are it's worse than showing up in a suit from hm which like I've said already are not bad at all. People on here like to justify their expensive purchases by noting the exceptional quality but in reality if it's something you will wear everyday like a suit and it isn't a "harder" type good like a jacked or pair of shoes it's going to wear out regardless of its price or "quality"

You can get 5 suits at hm relatively cheap, less than what it would cost for 2 normal prices suits and they will fit you better and are fine for younger people to wear, which is what I presume you are. At least go try them on, you'll like them.

Repeat after me, "I will never wear a fucking bow tie no matter how many pictures I see of Models, people who look so good that they are paid to have their picture taken, wearing them I understand that as an average looking person, no matter how man times my mom and family members tell me I look handsome, I will never ever wear a fucking bow tie"

I don't have alot of money, but I would spend a bit more for like 2 pairs which would fit with most other stuff. And I guess I don't have anything against wearing leather shoes outside, but I don't do that already.
Also I'm not working in a office i'm working as optician in germany. I don't really know anything about 'classy' clothing.

Any advise on how to wear that stuff if you are slightly chubby? All the clothes I find are either too wide or too tight.

eh....the suits at these places are "fast fashion suits", and if you wear one of these at the office you'll be scoffed at by the other professionals.

Sure H&M and Topman have good looking suits, but the way they are designed is kind of like the fuccboi of suits.

Also OP I don't know what your budget is, so I don't know what you consider an expensive suit.

IMO I'd either get a suit from Brooks Brothers, or for the cheaper alternative Banana Republic.

BR surprisingly has some nice cut suits, but the jacket alone is still going to cost you $400 (unless sale).

Oh also I heard someone saying they went to Jos A Bank and being surprised that they found some modern, well cut suits at a decent price. I personally don't know this though.

Don't go to big department stores like Macy or Dillard's. Nordstrom is OK though.

>2 pairs which would fit with most other stuff
A brown pair and a black pair then. Look for quality local cobblers for a good deal. Might seem expensive at first, but quality shoes can be resoled and will last a lot longer than cheap factory made shoes with rubber soles.

>working as an optician
Does that mean you'll be wearing a lab coat? If so, then avoid white shirts. Go for blue (classic) and/or pink (risky).

>how to wear that stuff if you are slightly chubby?
You can get it altered to fit, or you could lose the weight.

Just a heads up, try to get a suit that has a spill resistant surface. If you're wearing it every day, and going to conferences and the like, people inevitably spill their drinks on you etc. It's especially useful if you need to give presentations at a conference - I've had people intentionally spill drinks on me to try to discredit my appearance before I speak, being able to quickly wipe it off is a godsend.

>> No.10401388

>black pair then

I do not recommend this. You'll look and feel like you're either a G-man, a blues brother, or on the way to their fueral.

Black suits these days are very jarring for certain things.

An optician does not need a black suit.

I recommend something on the grey-scale, or close to black.

Losing weight is in progress but till then I have no other possibilities.

I'm not sure on how opticians look in other places but my coworkers all wear suits looking classy. Mainly selling glasses to people and always like one person actually making the glasses in a workshop with machines but still everyone has to look fine.

Overall a pretty /fa/ job.

>>10401388
It was about the shoes not the suit. I'm not wearing a suit right now anyways because I just started out

Shoes should be comfortable when you buy them, but they do break in a bit more over time.

In the states, opticians wear lab coats.Pretty sharp if opticians wear suits in Germany though.

A word of warning: if all your other co-workers are wearing suits, then you should probably look the part as well.

Also, a good thing about losing weight is that if you get something fitted to you before losing weight, a lot of the time it can be re-altered to fit again after the weight is lost.

I've only just read that the guy is an optician, so I guess it doesn't apply to him.

I started as a scientist, then went into finance, both areas are fairly competitive. When I was starting out (especially when I was doing my doctorate) there were a few occasions where similarly positions people from other groups blatantly poured juice/coffee on me about 5 minutes before I'd have to talk.

Back then all the spill resistant suits I saw looked terrible, but I still took them over having something stained and wet.

Also had someone flip a plate of buffet lunch (primarily sauces) at me, when I was the first person speaking in the afternoon session. People can be shits.

i have my own anecdote to share
i was sent by my company for a large conference, standard MICE stuff. It's prominent to attract some Fortune 500 names there,on the eve of our scheduled forum i was rehearsing for my presentation when a womyn entered the room,i thought nothing of it when suddenly she turned off the light and screamed rape, security came down on me and our presentation was postponed, thank god all the room have surveillance camera and many people came out to testify her walking on the room,it turns out that she did that to get revenge on of my team members, who screwed her over when he broke off from his old company
and the best of all,our conference was held in Sweden during that time

Women in the workplace were the bane of my existence during several periods, now I try very hard to make sure I don't work with women if I can avoid it. Of course, in a conference setting, there's nothing you can do.

I have a non-business but similar anecdote. At one stage in my life I had a house with a lot of outbuildings, and went away for a month. I returned to find a group of women squatting in my outbuildings. Being fairly reasonable, I told them to take a few days to get their stuff together then move off my land. A couple of nights later, they knocked on my door, offering their 'services' in order to continue squatting - I refused, told them to leave. A few hours later the police arrive - one of them called the police saying I was keeping them there and 'using' them.

I wonder if any man, in today's world, can get through a career without being accused of rape.
