I stopped skating when I was about 13.
It was frustrating me because I couldn't do any tricks on it and I couldn't pilot it very effectively so I just gave it up.
I got pic related for my birthday when I was 14. I've never used it to this day I'm 20. I live on a hill so it's not even useful to commute either because it goes too fast for me to stop going down and it's just deadweight on the way back up.
It's a nostalgic feel, a bad one at that.

Lean forward once you're in the air, and make sure your back foot isn't doing anything besides floating in the air while the board rotates under you. You might also check your front foot placement, if your flipping with too much foot on the board it's likely your front foot is dragging the board along with it while your kicking the board since there's a larger contact area between your foot and the grip (more friction).

If you're mostly cruising sizing up the board will be more comfortable, especially if you're an adult male. Get wheels that do what you want. You're skating around campus so 58mm is as small as I'd go, the larger diameter the smoother your ride will be. Just make sure when you size up you get trucks that are the right size for your board to minimize wheel bite.
