In the last thread people were wondering about Midnight in Paris.
You can buy it at its CHEAP price here

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00MHA0Y3Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1441567315&sr=8-2&keywords=midnight+in+paris+perfume&dpPl=1&dpID=51xDxAUOa8L&ref=plSrch&pi=SY200_QL40

Since thread needs a bump, thought I'd review every frag in my collection, in order of preference

Playboy Ibiza- it's just so fucking clean and it goes perfectly with my natural scent. idc how pleb it is, this frag is my favorite
Chanel Allure Homme Edition Blanche- really similar to Bleu but more lemony and less masculine, but in a good way
Guerlain Homme L'Eau Boisee- tremendous scent, best opening of my frags by far. A little too vetiver-y on the drydown
Avon Musk Marine- fucking great for Avon, I wear this on lazy days around the house or going someplace unimportant
Bleu de Chanel- it's great, no doubt. Not really my style, smells a little cheap honestly but obviously I don't care about that a ton.
Guess Seductive- basically just an amber frag but the opening is pretty interesting and "seductive." Definitely a young person's scent
La Nuit- if the incense was less prevalent I'd move this up the list
Diesel Plus Plus- too many notes, sometimes i catch a wiff and fall in love with it again, sometimes it makes me sick to my stomach.
Malbec- wish it didn't give me a headache
One Million- kinda gay and played out
Perry Ellis 360 red- bought it because it's supposed to be a lime scent but I barely get that. It's kinda metallic-y to me tbh
Tommy Bahama Set Sail St. Barts- bought it when I was on my lime kick, tremendous beginning but quickly turns to nasty crap
Creed Virgin Island Water- just got a decant, batch I got was too strong on the coconut. Okay but for the price it's definitely not worth it to me to buy a bottle

Any suggestions to my collection, anything that I'm lacking

like 90% of all perfumes are really unisex imo; gender categories in fragrance are really only consumer guides, only the extremes on each side of the continuum would be difficult for the opposite gender to pull off

That won't do you much good. Everyone was totally nice and eager to please.

That said. I ended up buying EdB. It's a really nice masculine vanilla and woods fragrance. A little too sweet to be a signature scent for me, but not too sweet for an occasional wear. I own a lot of frags, however.

Good analogy

It's supposed to emphasize your individual "natural scent" and be a bit woodsy with a slightvmusky/animalic undertone; it's frequently used to mimic cedar.

A lot of people also layer it with another fragrance as they claim it boosts longevity and projection.

But unlike Hugo Boss you have up to 20-25% of essence in Fragonard's fragrances while in Hugo Boss and any other it's up to 10-12%. You could do a lot worse for your first fragrance. You likely won't be smelling like anyone else, and like I said chicks dig it. It tends towards a clubby fragrance, but it would do well at work too. It doesn't skew young or old, or even modern or old-fashioned. Very well-balanced in that regard. I might not want to bust it out when the weather gets really hot and muggy, but that is really the only limitation I can think of. Of course, I always recommend sampling first, but it's not too expensive IIRC, so I say go for it.

Honestly, there are some good links in the sticky. Poke around and get some knowledge but def try a bunch. Hopefully you live near some stores that give out samples, or at least have testers that you can spray on yourself.

http://www.basenotes.net/threads/212334-Which-scent-gets-you-the-most-female-compliments/page213?p=3327074&viewfull=1#post3327074
http://www.basenotes.net/bn_todaysscent.php?p=boys&t=alltime
http://www.basenotes.net/forums/24-Just-Starting-Out

The first two should give you a check list to try of the most popular ones. Bear in mind basenotes caters to enthusiasts who don't mind dropping hundreds of dollars on a bottle, so just ignore the Creeds for now unless you're rich. Honestly, they're good, but I don't think they're 10x as good as a lot of designer frags. Speaking of which, picture related is as close to a top ten as I have. All those have gotten female compliments, except M7. I do tend to prefer more "mature" scents, but I just find frags that are marketed toward young people tend to be too sweet for my tastes.

Well, good luck and enjoy the journey, anon.

Kouros
BK
M7
Rive Gauche pH

Chanel:

Antaeus
Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentrée

Dior:
Fahrenheit

Of those, I hold Égoïste and Antaeus in such high regard, I have to give it to Chanel, but I also consider Kouros and Fahrenheit 10/10 frags, so it's tough.

Not too feminine, and more importantly imo, not too powdery. I'd take her on a trip to a high end department store so you both can smell some different frags, maybe try on one or two and hopefully walk away with a bunch of samples. I'd recommend not buying something you just smelled that day; you should wear something more than a couple times to see how it develops on you throughout the day.

If there are no stores near you, I'd say get her a bunch of samples. Perfume is too personal to just buy a full bottle too quickly, especially since you guys are newbs.

In order of preference, you can get samples at high end dept stores or boutiques, or a Sephora or the like. I'm in the US, and I hear we have it pretty good wrt that. Hopefully wherever you are is comparable. Next, you can write to each house and ask them for samples. Some will blow you off, and some will send you some, esp if you live some place where they are not accessible. Next would be buying them, either on eBay or buying decants in the links in the OP.

And as far as narrowing it down, I guess you can use the bn link I posted earlier as a kind of checklist for what's popular. Also http://www.fragrantica.com/groups/ does a good job of explaining frag groups. But honestly, I don't think there's any shortcut to actually smelling stuff in person. Esp if you're new and can't picture a scent by its description, you dig? If she's in to it, it won't be tedious. If I have time to kill in a mall or dept store, you know I'm gonna be chatting up the fragrance counter reps and checking out new stuff. And getting some samples of course. I think if you genuinely are interested in something, the (good) reps will respond to that and try to help you out.

Hey guys, why do people on fragrantica and almost everywhere else hate on the new Dior Savage, while they love Bleu de Chanel.

Are they going to hate at the begining and then love it like they did with Bleu? Or are they going to end up hating both of them because they are similar?

Either way I can't reason having different opinion on them since they both smell pretty much the same, or am I missing something?

Yes, "cologne" is used to refer to men's fragrances in many places, and "perfume" for women's.

However, there are concentrations of fragrances known as Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette, and Eau de Parfum. These refer to the concentrations of oils in the fragrance. Edc < edt < edp. But even assuming there are gender lines in fragrance, lime and mandarin notes are pretty unisex, even tending toward masculine, IMO. The only indicator of citrus is, depending on how it is presented, those notes are typical of summer scents.

I'm not familiar with Jo Malone scents, but that house has a good reputation.

CDG fragrances probably best represent what I feel the word 'niche' actually means (even though they are essentially a designer house). Pretty much every offering from them is weird in some way. Now, that doesn't mean bad, it just means that their approach to perfumery is just different. They like to use notes or blends of notes that are not common, they really take an avant garde approach to crafting their scents.

Definitely check them out but I would say to sample heavily before pulling the trigger on any purchase, probably one of the least friendly blind buy houses out there

Generally speaking niche fragrance houses tend to view their offerings as more of an 'art' than designer houses who ultimately want to create a mass appealing scent that will sell. They usually use higher quality ingredients and as such their fragrances tend to smell 'richer' and 'fuller' than most designer scents. As far as reasons to get into niche fragrances, I guess if you're really interested in smelling unique rather than just 'good' or you're bored with most of the designer offerings then you should give them a look

As far as getting into niche scents, I would suggest sampling some offerings from these houses. Most high-end department stores like Nordstrom, Dillard's, Bergdorf Goodman & Neiman Marcus are going to carry at least some of these brands and all of them, for the most part, still tend to make 'accessible' fragrances, just of a much higher quality:
Creed

If you mean this in the sense that most people can't afford/won't pay $300/bottle, I will give you "unique."

I'm not saying some niche perfumes don't smell fantastic, but let's be real here, just as many designer frags smell fantastic, but for realistic prices. Many of the same noses work for designer and niche houses alike. No offense, but niche houses love people like you who think more expensive/exclusive = better.

I buy what I like, and if a niche fragrance smells good enough to me that I feel it's worth the price to me, I buy it, but please, don't go spouting that marketing BS that just made Oliver Creed chub up.

Niche just means the perfumes come from houses that specialize, usually exclusively in fragrance (this also means room fragrances, candles, etc.). They also typically invest in better ingredients and more intensive production methods because of that.

They can be more complex, more creative, and less focused on "crowd-pleasing," but that does make them automatically better than designer scents. It's ultimately up to the individual.
