Don't feel bad or anything, those are tough shoes to pull off. Going simple and clean with the rafs is the right mindset. It's difficult to teach someone what would work here. You can't teach "fashion sense" and it can only be built by trying something new and failing - like you just did - and lurking more and being repeated exposure to graceful/skillful fits.

The fact that you are willing to learn shows that you will probably be pulling off great fits sooner rather than later. Keep trying.
