Hey guys, I love post-punk style.
I'm going to post some inspo.

Post-Punk essentials:
Sweaters over collared shirts
Bomber jackets
High-waisted trousers
Tucked-in shirts
Everything always in muted colors.

I hoped we could start a thread about this style.
Post fits, inspo, and discuss

Pic rel.

well, i don't agree they _sound_ pop-like tbh. the Smiths might resemble pop music song-stucture-wise, but looking at the complex (and as i like to call it proto-twinkly math) guitar work and also at the bass which is basically providing the main melodies, i'd say that characterizes something as post-punk.

Ehh, they do sound pretty close, but I think it's less about sound and more about influence. I mean, if you listen to a bunch of post-punk, you'll notice they often sound very different. But they were all drawing from kraut, synth pop and the punk rock scene, while Morrissey was basically emulating Marc Bolan and such, with some post punk elements.

On an unrelated note, Big Paul used to have the best hair, pic related.

No wave is definitely a sound too, specifically a lack of cohesiveness and structure in the music. Some no wave bands just learned to play their instruments, whereas post punk bands play theirs well.

i tried it but my legs are too long for my torso, i look like a brick in two sticks and my bomber isnt too slim for that, its a very funny silhouette it makees, sometimes i alternate with a plain white crew neck shirt when i want something more casual

What exactly makes one of these bands no wave and the other not. One is based in NYC, that's it really. If Chrome were a New York band you'd call that no wave too.

>whereas post punk bands play theirs well
Once again, it's all post-punk. Post-punk itself doesn't have any specific traits at all, just any kind of experimental punk music. Then it branched out in different directions, some that don't even resemble punk anymore. Point being, it's non descriptive. It's an umbrella term for a whole bunch of different rock sounds that emerged in the late 70's - early 80's.

so by listening alone you couldn't really tell if a band was post-punk or not?

You can probably make a pretty good guess. It doesn't really matter though. If you want to call a band like Have A Nice Life post punk, which doesn't fit any scene, doesn't fit the era and probably is more related to another genre, I'm not going to object. Because it kinda sounds like previous post punk bands.

The label is slapped on everything it seems. A lot of popular post punk bands did in fact dislike the term, and identified more with another genre. The overlap is just too big.

This is often lumped in with the no wave scene, when it's probably more jazz than punk

Same thing with the New Age Steppers and dub

Here's a chart that try to put some cohesiveness in the mess.
