I'll also copy+paste some interior tips from old threads that I saved in an old word doc

>Always buy all white duvets, pillowcases, sheets instead of ones with garish print. They won't clash with the furniture and will actually make the room look more open. Look at all the "comfy" rooms in this thread ... what do you notice they have in common? Fucking white bedclothes

>Make sure there's plenty of light, whether it be natural or otherwise. If you buy lamps, make sure they're higher (like a stand lamp) rather than lower (desk/bedtable lamp) and buy color-corrected, "natural light" bulbs instead of those disgusting yellow ones. Brushed aluminum or white powdercoated lamps like the ones you can get at Ikea for literally $10 don't clash with furniture. Actually really important because you have to spend so much time in your room, and proper lighting (and PROPER LIGHTBULBS) can actually help prevent clinical depression

>Hanging pictures on the wall makes it feel less like a cell but don't just tape up ugly movie posters. Look online for DIY ways to hang posters (like using those clamps clotheshangers) and then choose simple ones like black-and-white or low-contrast photos. Again, doesn't clash and also makes the room feel more homey/comfy.

Cheap wood like those found on skids can only be sanded down so much before they start to split, and given how they're under an inch thick, it's probably not even worth it.

It's a nice aesthetic, but you'd need to buy some decent pine and build one yourself. You'd even have a bed-sized surface to sleep on.

Seems very strict and hard to make it, what can you call it, "out-going" or maybe just "different".

I would stick to keeping it somewhat minimalistic, as it's kind of the only choice you have.

For starters, the furniture is extremely ugly and depressing. The hideous floor makes it hard too. I don't know how much money you can/want to spend on a dorm makeover, but luckily IKEA exists.

I would stick to metallic/black furniture (Maybe not, hence the floor and maybe the walls too, they look kind of nicotine yellow??) and then all white bedsheets etc.

For the walls, I would put some Zdzisław Beksiński artworks (to fit the darker theme I would go for), whether it would be framed posters or what ever.

But maybe you should just leave it be. For how long do you have to live there? If it's something like one to two years, I wouldn't really bother. As everyone else says, dormrooms generally is just ugly.

But at least change the furniture (chairs, desk, dresser) to something nicer. If you're not going for the black theme, go for some paintings from the surrealism, like Salvador Dalí or something like picture related, just to brighten the room up a bit. Maybe just a photography.

Thanks for the reply and the helpful advice. I'm trying to get my room redone for the next semester, however I am looking for a bachelor eventually, but everything I find in my price range is just gross too. The walls are surprisingly pretty white, but the carpet is a dirty looking grey. I currently have all black bedding so I'll check out some white. The only upside to this place is the giant window I have that overlooks downtown. And I have a bit of a green thumb, there's about 7 plants in the windowsill. I also really like the Beksiński idea. It fits how I feel about the place. The dorms are half nursing home and I always wonder about how many people died in my room before they made this half the dorms.

I'm the guy that owns the room. (surprised people saved it tbh), but it does have skylights. 2 to be exact. But it doesn't give you access to the roof unfortunately. It did used to get hot but I put blackout blinds in the skylights and it keeps the heat out during the day, so it's not that bad.

I'm moving into a blank condo in one month. Pic related is taken from just inside the front door. Not pictured is a broom closet that is beside the fireplace.

The bedroom is around the corner behind the fireplace. It is 11x11 feet and my decorations will only be my floor mat, a small dresser, and probably a few other things I see fit.

Love this thread. Maybe you guys can help me.

Can't post pics because my room's messy as fuck at the moment. It's fully decorated in black and white. Black walls and a white floor. One wall has vertical stripes in b/w. Furniture is in black and white too. People love my room when they see it but I feel it doesn't have the warmth a room should have. Seems I'm more of a wood person after all. It's probably too modern for my tastes.

Any ideas on how to make a modern interior, well, less modern? I want to achieve comfiness with a few changes. Any inspo?

Just start integrating light coloured wood furniture into the room. Like birch, maple, light pine, etc. Stick with one that you like, and, at least for the time being, stick with white or black fabrics/detail on said furniture. Maybe start phasing in some dark blues? Also why the hell do you have black walls? Paint that shit.

I wish I had a scanner, there was some nice stuff in a magazine my Mum brought over the last time she visited. There was a charcoal/slate blue/white/maple kitchen cabinet that was gorgeous. Would give you a nice colour palate with what you're working with too. Something along the line of these colours.

Black makes the room seem smaller (or cozier if you prefer), but you just need to make sure your lights are cool enough. White/blue or yellow lights don't really do black any favors, make sure you get some nice hearty orangeyred lighting.

?

FYI light temperature is NOT THE SAME as color temperature. If you've ever observed fire you will notice that the outside of the flame is red, then moving towards the middle you will see orange, and yellow maybe even nothing in the very middle. If it's a very hot fire (eg gas fed) you will see the flame even turn blue after that.

For reference;

1,850 K: Candle flame, sunset/sunrise (ORANGEYRED)

2,700–3,300 K: Incandescent lamps (yellowy to white)

3,000 K: Soft (or Warm) White compact fluorescent lamps (pretty damn white at this point)

3,200 K: Studio lamps, photofloods, etc. (so white they're blue)

You're right.

Actually 3,200K isn't quite hot enough to be cool, iirc cool is >5000K so yeah daylight is cool.

Mix it up a bit, use multiple lights of multiple strengths, heights, directions, and color temperatures.

r8 this layout.

>room is ~10'x9'
>big brown thing in bottom left corner is a drafting table w/chair
>black thing next to it is a metal shelf, 5' tall
>grey thing next to bed is a night stand
>wood in corner is a 5' tall set of drawers
>brown on top is a 3.5' tall dresser

TV will be but on top of the black shelf. There will be a royal blue 2' shelf sitting on the back of the drafting table. On top of that will be my amplifier. Speakers will sit on the dresser. I will have a desk lamp as well as a lamp on the night stand. Colored string lights will be hanging from the ceiling.

Not pictured: 7.5'x5.5' oriental rug in middle of the room that I will run the speaker wires under.

I'm planning on worst case scenario that I get the room without the window. I'm not sure if I have a closet, it's been like 8 months since we toured the unit and we couldn't take pictures of the bedrooms. If not, I will push the dresser closer to the door and make a clothes rack to fit out of metal pipe between the dresser and the set of drawers.

Sorry, but that looks awful. Especially where you put it over the pipes. If you were trying to go for the illusion of having real brick, then you definitely fucked it up there.

What exactly are you going for? If you're after some bare industrial look you could paint the walls to look like concrete.
