Their whole mission is to be like a non-scuzzy sex shop a woman can feel comfortable going to to get a dildo or vibrator or something, which I get I think that's a huge market that goes untapped so I get it.

They're all super professional and know about the stuff they sell and care and use and shit, so I went in asking for a prostate massager and when I was browsing they totally gaveme all the info I'd need and directed me to the right one for me, thanked me for my business and stuff. I was impressed, it wasn't full of old pervy greasy dudes like my past sex shop experiences and it was reasonably priced.

great shop, if you're ever in portland and in the market for sex toys you should go for it.

Also Fabric has better stock than Zambesi but Zambesi's own clothing line has some strokes of genius so I think it's the best store, unless you count consignment which gets better clothes in than any retail shop.

I agree, in general the premiums on most international labels in New Zealand is ridiculous, which is why it;s a good idea familiarising with the local (exceptional) talent, because they are MUCH more reasonable price wise.

And definitely, Fabric is so much more better composed than Zambesi, or store history wise, maybe any shop in New Zealand.

The shop is approximately 12 years old (i think establish in 2003) and has done everything from Pre-Theory helmut-lang, to early Undercover, early Visvim, Junya, pre-renzo roso MMM, etc, just sick history- talk to the dudes in store.
They are also way more dedicated to actually developing like a store culture, opposed to Zambesi which is probably just attempting "edgyness incarnate" (and sucking).

Zambesi's mainline is utter trash.

Anyway;

1. TÜR
2. Fabric
3. SCOTTIES

SGC is really fucking bad too.

You've never found pre-theory HL or pre-renzo roso MMM in a Auckland consignment store.

The difference between what I'm saying about Fabric and what you're saying about Fabric is that Fabric introduced these objects to the market in Auckland about a decade ago (when it was still okay (not peak, still rad though))

What's funny is that you're not recognising that the Zambesi's market model is something like ripping the pattern straight off the same stock of international designers that they stock, using worse fabrics and less skilled labour to produce the knock-offs and then selling them at lower price points.

At this point it's little more than some sort of buffer between Rick's mountain suiting and contemporary Acne.

What is impressive about Zambesi (as of late) is the Bernhard Willhelm stuff.

Pretty much shits on all the other stock (aside from the Rick)

You don't know the finer details.

But I agree, i think how we catagorise the value of a stockist is different.

I just don't think Zambesi introduces anything compelling, especially when there are active companies (who they are trying to ape) that do it much better at actually more reasonable price points (if we don't consider the NZ market price points)

There's also PLUME in Dunedin.

Okay, this is how stockists, or stores in general work.

Because the Auckland market is so small a store CAN'T afford to compete for the same designer.

Like, let's ask "why doesn't Fabric stock Rick, or operate like Zambesi?"
Because Fabric has produced a certain store image that's kind of like, Heritage/Japanese street wear and if they were to attempt Zambesi's "Dark fashion" they would have to try and overcome 20+ years of "Dark fashion" cred which Zambesi has accrued.

And as Rick fits Zambesi's image more than Fabric's they can't afford that commercial risk, because as a competitor they are unlikely to succeed (in that it doesn't really fit the store image AND Zambesi has massive "Dark fashion/Rick" cred on them).

It's a lot of commercial strategy but that's why usually only a single store will stock a single international dude (the stores can't afford to compete)

Actually, interestingly enough, recently The Shelter in Ponsonby tried stocking MMM, they were more or less beaten out of the brand when they realised Zambesi already had such a lock and couldn't compete

The reason why PLUME can get away with it is because they're the only stockists in the South Island AND that's because the Zambesi owner and Plume owner are sisters.

Anything seems confusing please feel free to ask.

>>10130541

OH (sorry for the spam) but maybe compare how in Melbourne there will be 3-4 different stockists of Rick within a 1-2km radius.

That's because the market can sustain that level of commercial consumption and competition and there is enough diversity in what Rick produces each season and what the stockists (buyers) can pick and choose to distinctly differentiate themselves from one another even with the same collection.

It's also important to consider, the clothing culture and disposiable income in Melbourne in compaison to that in Auckland...
Just general economic concerns and how they compare etc...
