I think it's the same thing as for ninja.
My guess is that it's not planned out in every detail but that he has a basic concept that every tat revolves around.

For me for instance i have the concept of only red and black/grey tats with the overall topic of nature/technology, savagery/culture and so on for the two sides of my body.
Every tattoo will have this as a basic topic or theme but i didn't come up with a design for every single bodypart yet

I am confused. How are the tats bad if you like their aesthetic?
Do you mean the design is good but they're tattoed badly? That's not the case. His early lettering is hand made with a single needle and as good as it gets for this kind of concept.
His more standard stuff like the backpiece or the lower left leg are tattoed with a machine and not technically bad either.

You know that the lettering is supposed to look like it does right?

this. also cool fact he had the (iirc) lord of the rings sleeve and aphex twin logo before he took on the ninja persona (and maybe the centipede thing on his leg as well? looks like constructus-era art to me). he covered up the sleeve in early footage as ninja because it wasn't very zef and detracted from the new image, but stopped worrying about it soonafter.
