Im a 21 yo ausfag, if we score in the top 100th percentile, do some extra bullshit tests and an interview, we can get in undergrad, although honestly post grad students are a lot less...insipid. I would recommend medicine for anyone who has a great social support system/ SO and is mentally tough, its a complete rollercoaster of a career and it can be the best, you help people, solve medical problems, and meet crazy amazing people but definitely do the nursing first, you'll get a taste of the dying and other difficult parts before you decide. But keep in mind medicine is isolating, you'll miss important events in the lives of the people around you, you will be isolated and you wont have any time for anything.
Its not my career I hate, just me- I was born in a battleground and spent the first years of my life there, my ptsd is insane, not to mention my life only got crazier from there, Im just taking time off with a psychologist to solve my issues instead of going through with my own solution (an hero). But its not medicine, med is definitely a career I would recommend. The world needs more doctors/ people like you. Ausfag again so Im only going to be $50 000 in debt and its by government so they'll deduct it in my tax

I was pretty new to the corporate world when I first asked a co-worker how much they make and they told me bluntly and honestly "Don't ever ask anyone how much they make, that's one of the most unprofessional things you can do."
One reason to not ask is because no one really gives a shit about how much you or someone else makes, if they're asking they're simply comparing with you to see if their bowl has more.
Another reason is because if someone is making less than you and they perceive that they are doing more work than you are for less pay, they can bring that to management and that causes shit.

Removing trip for this post...

I own an Architectural Engineering firm and a P&C businees. I employ 3 engineers, besides myself. All are somewhat-recently graduated. I also have 6 licensed agents selling insurance under the business as well.

P&C business brings in about $175k/yr before taxes/bills. Usually take home about $40k after all bills/salaries are paid, but I only show up 1 hour at the end of every month.

The AE firm varies drastically, depending on current projects, but usually makes about $500k/yr before taxes/bills. I take around $120k/yr of profit from this.

Im 28 years old btw. P&C business was passed on by my grandfather when he passed and the AE firm was only possible because my ex-boss (now business partner) is the #1 architect in LA and has opened his book of business to me.

Wrong field. There isnt a single first world country that has the same laws. Especially if you compare the legal system of the US, UK, Germany and Japan you will see how ridiculously different they are. Your best shot at working 'on a global scale' would be to go into EU law.

Whoops, sorry for the delay on this dude.

1) DO NOT GO TO LAW SCHOOL
2) DO. NOT. GO. TO. LAW. SCHOOL.

Read every single bit of this:
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3301274

It is all very, very accurate.

All the same, the way to practice law across the globe would be to get attached to some sort of big firm in Europe or Asia or something - they tend to have their attorneys move around a lot and help waive each other in where necessary. To do that, you'll need to (1) go to a top-tier law school (if it isn't in the T14, don't go, period), (2) get phenomenal grades (hope you enjoy a curve that tops out at A- so your top-of-the-class grades low your GPA like they did mine!), (3) have some foreign language experience (Spanish doesn't count), and (4) be willing to slave away for 10+ hours a day.

That said, if you're a low level attorney, you won't be going anywhere but the bottom of your desk to sleep, so it's far from a fun jet-setting lifestyle.

I'm having a lot of fun working with my team right now, though. Everyone dresses stylishly here, even the construction crew, and I'm the only guy in the office.

lol no. idk where the fuck you live in the US. Unless your state has some crazy sales tax, and even then.

I am a cashier at a local grocery store and I make $8.25/hr and get anywhere between 11 and 28 hours/week. kinda shitty. I need to find a better job that I can work while being a student. I was already making that much before they raised the minimum wage but my wage hasn't (and will not be) adjusted to compensate for it so fuck me

I don't get a wage as such, but i've got a "training allowance" of £12,000.

Yeah £12,000 isn't a lot I know but my cost of living is very small and I don't pay income tax for a variety of legal reasons I get to take home my full wage.

Does anyone here have a job in which they actually apply knowledge of psychology and sociology? I started a degree in computer science and I'm doing alright but it's boring and everyone in the department is autistic and hard to work with.

Been thinking of switching to a psychology/sociology double major with a minor in statistics or marketing...hopefully get picked up by an advertising agency or at the very least get hired at a university and be a professor and conduct research...

idk if this is what you meant but I'm a school psychologist, not exactly an application of sociology though of course you can make a case for it since social issues and education go hand in hand. Definitely real-world application of education-specific psychology (child cognitive/behavioral development).

BA in psychology, MS Ed in school psychology. You could for a PhD or PsyD too if you wanted to be a professor or do more research but I much prefer actually just practicing in a school and the salary increase isn't that much for having the doctorate where I am.

School psychs work differently depend on age/grade level and needs of the students in the school. I'm in an elementary school and am considered a "case manager" since I manage students' cases pertaining to special education. For the most part, I evaluate/test children, write reports on how they did, and develop individualized education plans (IEPs) if they need special education services. When I test a kid for the first time, it's with both a cognitive and an academic assessment, and usually a behavior and/or personality assessment to get a measure of their social-emotional development. I also get called on to intervene if a child is having behavioral difficulties. There's lots of consultation and collaboration with administration, teachers, different types of therapists like speech, physical therapist, and guidance counselors. It's good to be aware of what resources are available to families in the community, or where to make a referral if, for instance, maybe the child should see a neurologist or something like that. It can be pretty stressful since you're making decisions that impact a child's life and education but if you have a good team at your school then it can be great. I really do enjoy what I do, though I could just be feeling positive now that the school year's basically done and summer vacation's just around the corner.
