Art shows and galleries are a great way to get exposed to art. Also some introductory art history courses help a lot to appreciate and understand what you're looking at. Sometimes a quiet walk through your local museum can be very provoking. You might also like Rothko if you're interesting in Soulage, but both these artists are meant to be seen in person.

I'm not familiar with any online courses, but if you have a nearby community college you could register for a class. Rothko practices existentialism and it get's completely missed when photographed. His art is typically very large for a reason, i.e., so it can envelop the viewer. You can never appreciate a Rothko w/o staring at it from a few feet away.

I mean that when you've gone thru the self destruction of artistic avant-guardes step by step, with at its end the assertion of the realization of art in the destruction of the very separation between the spheres of art and everyday life, which really is what separated art from technics, you don't really see how going back to conceptual shit and duchamp's critic of aesthetic is that deep.
But like I said, one would be mistaken to think that way.

Apply to Eluard/Breton and Dada Debord, some of Baudrillard, and Adorno. Nothing new really, you've got every right to be disappointed. But really, it's the collective works of the avant-guards which are the most interesting, because they are the most radical. Pick any movement (new objectivity, Dada, whatever) and look up their journals, manifestos, political writings.

>> No.9893876

I'd add to that to check the work of artists like Rauschenberg, Klein, Arman and César, who question the position of art in relation to real life. Jasper Johns also. Basically they question the artistic values of ordinary objects and how we perceive art.

Look at this wikipedia page too, if you read everything that's mentionned you will understand a few (good and bad) things about how avant-guardes worked : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_manifesto

And here is a very influential book of Baudrillard which you should read once you've looked at Debord's work :

Damien Hirst is an artistically bankrupt charlatan that uses John Berger as a manual while aping Duchamp.

He's the end of the line for postmodernism: crass, jokey and derivative -- completely hollow and dead on the inside, like the skulls and shark carcasses that he uses as a medium. He knows it. That's why he lamp-shaded it. And now he's giggling to himself as he stuffs his head up his own asshole in an infinite loop of subjectivity and meta-discourse. "Haha! oh what a statement!"

Fuck him. Fuck this careless afterbirth of modernism. His work is degenerate and makes me gag.

A preconditioning of getting me to give a fuck about your work is that *you* give a fuck about your work. If your half-assed misinterpretation of Derrida or some other post-structuralist thinker precludes that because you've given up on impossibility of communication, then get the fuck out of my face and take your cow carcasses with you.

Someone please explain to me why Keith Haring is considered good. I get Basquiat, but Haring has always just struck me too simplistic and uncompelling. As design, it's fine, but to me there's not much more than that.

Haring fans, explain?

i always personally liked how he tackled such adult subjects (lots of his pieces talk about slavery, death, and his AIDS diagnosis) in such primitive, almost childlike ways. i also really like the aesthetic of his work.
