Gender expression is more complex than " I'm a man so I must dress dadcore ".

Gender expression is a gradient, from traditional femme looks to traditional men looks and everything in between, you can use when experimenting with your style. For exemple, if a woman wears a suit traditionaly worn by men, her outfit can look more manly than if she wore a dress. This is a very simple example but gender expression is generaly more subtle : earrings (are you wearing the pair or just one ?) , necktie (how tight is the knot ? wich knot do you use ? Some women wear neckties by simply rolling it around the neck) the length of your trousers (are your ankle showing ? Are your legs shaved ?), the length of your shocks etc.

In a society in wich gender are clearly defined, people in fahsion use gender expression to express something considering their actual gender. As a man, you can chose to use both trandional men and women clothes and accesories to express a blured line between gender. As man, you can also chose to express the opposite gender, as the fembois do.

By doing that, it also questions your vision of genders. What is it to be a man ? What is it to be a woman ? Is a woman who wears a suit is still a woman. But what defines the womaness ? Length of hair ? Size of bra ? A femboi is a man ? Yes but he dresses like a woman. So, is gender a matter of fashion ? Are only manly men actualy men ? But what if you dress a manly dad with a skirt ? Will he become a woman ?

Even if you're not aware about gender expression, fashion uses it. Each era has its standard considering gender expression. Nowadays, " boyfriend jeans " are a pretty standard piece of women wardrobe. But it's traditionaly speaking a manly cut for jeans. That's only one of the many mainstream use of gender expression.
