I'm just curious about how many of you guys have the actual funds to spend on designer clothing. I don't care if you worked your ass for it or you are just daddy's little princess/prince.

IIRC in a thread about finances a while back, most people indicated that their major cops come from saving money as much as possible. In other words, most of their expensive clothing is disproportionate to their actual income.

It's not a bad thing, just a different sort of dynamic.

I sound like a broken record at this point, but:
- There are a LOT of certifications that only require you buy a book and pay for the exam.
- If you are willing to assume loan debt, plenty of well-reputed universities have online B.S., M.S., etc. programs.
- Gym memberships
- Club memberships in your area, particularly those that allow you to meet people
- Spending little amounts of money to refurbish what you own - your house, car, etc.

You get the idea. Investing in yourself now is obviously going to be preferable to purchasing transient stuff.

It's good to save money, it's good to be practical, but if you really want something (and you feel good about paying what it really costs), then it's not a problem, right?

The real problem is when people are broke and blow their money because they think "JUST THAT ONE NEXT ITEM will complete them, and then I'll fit in.

Being rich and buying bullshit isn't better than being poor and buying bullshit. In both cases the impulse is identical, I'd actually say the poor has more reason to indulge in such things to distract them from their existence in this alienating world which is more apparent to them that it would be to the sheltered habitual spender from a middle class suburban family.

Its about finding a style or style that works and makes you look great. You have to look like you OWN the style -- its why movie characters can pull off crazy odd looks, because we associate that style with them, i.e. they own the style and make it work.

Anything can be a form of signaling -- not just literally wearing your wealth on your sleeve. There's the guys on /g/ with their battlestations, and the guys on /toy/ with their rare collectibles. But it's silly to do so anonymously. You don't stand to gain by altering anyone's perception of you, because you're strangers who will never meet. That's beside the issue of defining yourself by what surrounds you, rather than what's within you. Posters here constantly talk about insecurity, and how it's often more important how you wear a thing, than what you're wearing. No amount of money will ever make up for a shit personality. Marketing is not constrained to just advertising. The very notion of branding is a marketing tool, intended to project certain ideas onto a single idea that humans can hold inside of their heads neatly.

Not saying this is bad, in many cases, branding may be a way to allow consumers to choose quality. However, just posing this as a challenge to think.

What, for example, does it mean for a particular piece to be from "Hermes". It just allows you to prescribe preconceptions onto the piece. Does it tell you what the design process behind the piece was? Does it tell you what the manufacturing process behind the piece was?
No. All it does is give you a starting point to begin research into those things.

What if I'm already in university, full ride
Have free gym membership
Live in paid for university accommodation
Attend essentially free clubs at my university
Put away 40% of my current earnings to the future

I can't drink because of medication and I won't do drugs

Does it then make sense for me to spend most of the rest of my money on hobbies, fashion being the most important one?

I have a handful pieces that I worked my ass off for. I don't wear them as often as I like because I work 70-75 hours a week, but I still don't regret it.

Doing what?
that's like 15 hours over 5 days or 12 over 6. don't you think you should get a new job?

This is embarrassing..damn it I wish I was into the instagram/facebook shit that I took pictures. But I bought like 2k worth of Burberry last weekend. All your shit looks last season....did you go to an outlet store?

>OCT
>sit on my ass 4 out of 8 hr workday
>make bank
>don't have any real financial problems

I can afford it pretty easily.

>someone that gets all of their self worth from buying
So much generalization and so much projecting.

For starters whats considered "worth" it differs from person to person, you may think paying an X amount on an item is "bullshit" but other people might think not. It's the same tired argument that pops out around here every month or so by enlightened types like you, essentially you're beating a dead horse.

And correct me if i'm wrong but you're entire train of thought seems to base on the premise that people here value their life by what they buy? Is that it?

P.s. Theres nothing wrong of deriving enjoyment from your purchases, you're making it out like we have to be somehow guilty/apathetic about buying things. With that kind of 0 satisfaction whats the point then? And that goes for anything, food, essential goods, etc etc

Just because their products are high quality doesn't mean they won't look like shit on you. Only fit that looked good on you was this one

This one >>9962219 makes you look like a bitch Arab dude who has no fashion sense and just spends oil money on anything Ferrari related or high priced. Case in point from phone case.

I would suggest continuing to find your aesthetic. The prep core-ish thing you posted looks good on you. Also don't forget that this is a board about fashion, not who can spend the most money and still manage to look like shit most of the time.

To me, when you tastefully pair your designer clothing, you'd look like a godlike citizen. But then again, it all comes to the general aesthetic of the person. And tbh, money does help a lot.

Rico Love makes a strong argument at 14:34 onwards about how he doesn't get X just because it's X but rather for the way it looks. Good video for sneakerheads especially those inclined towards luxurious side of the sneaker spectrum.

I'd agree. Only if we are talking about their high end clothing. Their garish polo shirts and patterned button downs are totally targeted at the nouveau riche chav crowd and should be burned.
