What are /fa/s most anticipated upcoming collections? Are we fashion conscious enough to know the next years big pieces?

For me it's Undercover aw15, it's so good it diverted me from my love of ss15 almost immediately. The coat/cardigans with the hand prints make me go wild.

I'm also really interested in what elements of walter van beirendoncks new collection actually make it to stores. Vibing heavy on the explicit beauty collection even if i can never afford his work. Nice to see him garnering good responses from the fashion world again after getting so boring for a while.

The overall theme was on artistic freedom, and commented on recent events in which art had invoked violence (notably the Je Suis Charlie shooting, and the destrution of an inflatable butt plug sculpture, hence the necklaces.).

The phrase warning explicit beauty was just a phrase he used to highlight the importance of art while criticising those who harm others over it.

It's been a while since I read about it but I think that was the gist of it. He's been big on making broad cultural statements recently, what with his anti-racism moves in his previous years collection.

Easiest thing to do is look at runways (style.com is the go to). That's a baseline for being up to date. Going further, for every major fashion show, showstudio's youtube channel will make hour long videos on specific shows. The guests range from interesting to downright idiotic but it's good for discussion. Their Head to Head series is anincredibly elloquent version of this, but limited to the big players (versace, burberry, givenchy e.t.c) due to the nature of the commentators.

Other than that, the occasional magazine interview or article can add insight but there isn't actually that much in depth reporting going on.

helps to have decent foundation knowledge so read up on your fashion history, check the archive for book recommendations. general historical and social context is always good so it pays to be informed.
basically it comes down to actually paying attention to the fashion calendar, watching shows, reading about designers, handling garments, sifting through people's opinions and finding value where you can. i think it's important to find what you enjoy, but to also look at the broader picture of fashion.
i think a practical knowledge of clothing is important but possibly not as crucial as understanding the art itself. then again neither are absolutely necessary for you to simply enjoy clothes. and there's nothing wrong with simply being a fashion observer.
it might take you a while, possibly years, for you to fully digest what's being shown and to be able to articulate your own opinions on things but it's a fun hobby : )
make sure you check out your local scene

He's trying to revisit his archives and pulls out some odd ideas from all over in this collection. Some see it as soulless but it's clear he's kinda just fucking with people and the nature of fashion progression.

It's not a great collection but still refreshing to see him move back towards high concepts after a few years of boring shows.

A couple book recs (I haven't actually read that many since I have a shit library for this stuff.)

Pierre Cardin: 50 Years of Fashion and Design. (A good book, if only a slight bit picture heavy, about a massive figure in modern fashion history.)

Japan(ese?) Fashion Now (Great, often referenced starting point in understanding Japanese fashion and the influences that guide it).

Like I said I haven't read much, trying to source more good reads but so many fashion books i've found are just pictures with nothing else to speak of, very boring.

i like what they're doing
fw15 collection was seedy but charming
outerwear silhouettes were overwhelming
down and shearling jackets were absolute standout pieces
enjoyed the bombers and riders a lot too
margiela influence is very apparent, as everyone in the collective has apparently worked under him
seems that, like a lot of up and comings, that they're putting the emphasis almost solely on the clothes
which is apparent by the generic name and anonymity of members
still feels like a marketing tactic to me though
there were some comments about dubious construction quality floating around tumblr (pair of prematurely blown out jeans from fw15) but i imagine the guy was doing something retarded in his clothes to manage that

>> No.9938192

>>9938176
Yeah I definitely feel all that, I just personally react poorly to that massively oversized aesthetic where it looks like every aspect of the clothing is designed to not fit. When people like Yohji do it it feels a lot more elegant and wearable because he makes sure to give some basis of normality or just... tailoring skills? it's hard to say what makes him different to me.

Definitely cool as an artistic showing, but damn near impossible to see many people wanting to wear those outerwear pieces outside of fashion week showings.

i think the yohji comparison is apples to oranges personally. it's obvious the image they're trying to evoke, like a girl wearing her boyfriend's jacket or flannel to the club, is this not a basis of normality? i agree that styling might be difficult with some pieces, though this is nothing unique to vetements.

>> No.9938234

>>9938220
I was comparing a style of oversizing that I like to another that I dislike is all. I get the idea they're going for but what I meant by normality is more an idea that there is some effort to provide fit to the clothing.

The flannel idea makes sense and is a cool, totally wearable concept, but those suits for example are wholly impractical and do nothing but make a bold attempt to stick it to the world of tailored suits, which has just been done to death at this point.

I do dig them and I like the youthful attitude towards what is often quite a mature and refined aesthetic but i'd like to see a little more focus on moving beyond big statements that belong more in an art crowd, that kinda stuff is what fashion school is for, hence my earlier criticism.

At some level though fashion is so subjective and I would never outright say these guys aren't cool, just not something i'd ever see myself wearing.

i understand where you're coming from in regard to oversized silhouettes. what do you think of, for example, earlier raf simons or juun. j outerwear?

i agree with your stance on practicality, but that seems to be limited almost entirely to their statement pieces (being coats and shearlings this season). i'd argue that any "big statements" are limited to those pieces almost entirely. the rest is more or less a stylistic, largely wearable take on basics like regular jeans, turtlenecks, the ma-1, a perfecto, military sweaters and so on.
