Is Chi actually dangerous? I'm going to Northwestern next year which I've heard is in the safe/wealthy zone but I'll want to go into the city a lot. Don't wanna die. Never met a black person before.

I used to live in west woodlawn (63rd and cottage grove fam ww@) and was literally the only white guy. Nobody ever messed with me or tried to intimidate me or anything. That said, I've seen drive by shootings, arson, etc. There's a lot of crime, but as long as you're not a criminal yourself you generally won't find yourself mixed up in it.

I actually once found a little dimebag on the streets by the CVS at Racine and Roosevelt. Was some of the worst weed. In college used to buy weed from some guy who lived int he mixed income buildings by racine and taylor, still some of the best I've ever smoked. Once bought an ounce for only $40 out of a barber shop in englewood, shitty weed so just rolled blunts with it all day.

There's not much of a fashion scene. There's one goth ninja boutique run by aging manchildren from SZ. I used to do most of my shopping at the Barneys on Oak where all the SA's were very chill. If you're a grill then you have Ikram as well. Fun city, but not very fashion-forward tbh. A lot of streetwear. In the winter expect literally 50% of the population to be wearing yellow timberlands

Anyway, the Loop is where lawyers, doctors, and business people go during the day to work. You'll see them, and tourists. Fashion just isn't a thing there. The Loop is also dead at night.

The neighborhoods are where Chicagoans actually live. You'll see a fashion scene in the trendier areas, but Chicago is still very midwestern. The fashion there is at least a year or two behind.

Wicker Park is what most people think of as the hip area (basically over the hill in terms of gentrification). I'd recommend Logan Square, or Pilsen.

But when I first moved I was 22 or so. I lived in Logan Square then. A Lincoln Continental filled with 3 Puerto Ricans drove by 7-11 and they were all staring at me as they went.

Scared the shit out of me, a white kid from Michigan. But I figured out quick there's no reason to be scared. It's not like there are black guys waiting at the borders of the bad neighborhoods read to stab naive white kids.
